Electrifying the US postal service fleet as we replace the old trucks we've been using for decades was an obvious win if we could make it happen. Its now happening!

How a Cocaine-Smuggling Cartel Infiltrated the World’s Biggest Shipping Company

As MSC grew into a dominant force in global trade, it also became a prime drug-trafficking conduit for Balkan gangs

Here's your irregular reminder that:

Twitter was a multi-billion dollar company with thousands of employees.

Mastodon is a niche hobbyist product run by volunteers

The fact that we're being seen as a viable alternative to them is an admission that a federated, decentralized future is not only possible, but desirable.

Mastodon is not one thing, or one place. It's a network of many things and many places. We don't have a spokesperson (I mean, there's me. I'm the official spokesperson for 💯 of the fediverse, but beyond me there is no spokesperson) we don't have consensus on moderation or blocking or tools or what is good and what is bad. Some of us are professional SREs and Sysadmins, some of us aren't. Some of our instances have been around for 5+ years, some won't be here in six months.

And that's good! All of it, every last bit of it is good.

We're wrestling power away from the billionaire class, in real time, and reclaiming it for the People.

Hello? Is this thing on?

SHARP (Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing) is on Mastodon! Apologies for any hiccups as we work on getting used to the platform.

In the meantime, we'd appreciate getting the word out so we can stay /get connected with folks interested in book history.

Indeed, we need to make the fediverse welcoming but also somewhere that people can earn a living properly without a chain of payments resulting in the person writing and getting very little for their hard word.

@adamdavidson

Adam is absolutely right. Journalism needs to take ownership (finally).

Journalists need to invest in the fediverse. The fediverse will help journalists thrive, and the fediverse will thrive because of journalists.

Nobody has the luxury of waiting. Universities, brands, companies, and journalists need to move to the fediverse now. Or get in line for your AOL keyword.

Allegedly #Musk lost the chef position at #Twitter via public poll verdict. (What a pathetic thing to do, btw.)

I'd have voted him to stay because the least thing we need is a Twitter-Zombie. Either it somehow works like pre-Musk or it's dead. Keeping Musk would have been a safe bet on Twitter's death, most likely getting the rest of the important accounts over to Mastodon.

Furthermore, he's still the owner. Any new top manager needs to do what Musk says. So this won't change much IMHO. 🤷

@ct_bergstrom Science education should include the realities of the peer review process for a pub and giving a presentation of one’s work at a professional conference with ample Q&A time. #PeerReview #science #academia

@NWBylines@bylines.social Not sure, i am kinda too young to remember this on TV however I understand every word they say, these days a lot of presenters seem to mumble, which seems to have been the late Queens pet hate too.

I understand some regional dialects as I watch Last of the Summer wine, pure Yorkshre that.

@YorksBylines@bylines.social Where will this lead in the run up to important votes, people have been told no fault evictions will end, WHEN people don't have 2nd or 3rd homes to go to if they get kicked out they are HOMELESS.

@YorksBylines@bylines.social Doesn't chequers have huge grounds as well as a BIG house with lots of rooms, that is the occasional residence of the PM, perhaps we could make use of that. As a leader he / she should lead by example, rather than putting undue pressure on local councils to house asylum seekers while decisions are made, without providing proper financial and other support.

The way we are handling this is a disaster,

@YorksBylines@bylines.social Agreed, there are lots of and people here, as well as people who may be able to use as good way to get the real messages across.

@tomw @aral

I know there are a lot of hard working, small business owners out there who are reallly struggling, in the UIK this is not helped by train strikes over xmas when people attend markets or postal strikes preventing items being sent out in time for Christmas

Mastodon may be a small cog in making a difference, sell directly to customers and you avoid large companies / corporates taking their 'fees' which probably add up over time. .
