Why should a few companies – or a few billionaires – have the power to decide everything about #socialmedia spaces that billions of people use?

In the early days of the social internet, moderation decisions were made by members of the community.

CW: Racism, anti-racist vigilantism

@mvyrmnd

So the school tolerates racist abuse? Says a lot eh

I believe I have found a solution to a problem that others may have similar problems to too, so I want to share it.

The Windows-based RSS-client I use keeps suddenly dying, seemingly arbitrarily disappearing without any error-message even while not in active use.
I have tried other RSS-clients but none of them suited me.
It is probably not actively maintained anymore, because of Putin.

So, I found a very tiny (7.5kB) program called "Supervisor" that, when another program is launched through it, will keep monitoring if the other program has stopped running and if so just relaunches the other program.
It github.com/chebum/Supervisor is open source, free of cost, currently passes both Jotti (0/14) and VirusTotal (1/72) and the source looks fine to me.
It does leave a command-window open to run in, but that can be place in SysTray ("bottom right corner") to not be in the way using e.g. "The Wonderful Icon" and right-clicking on the regular minimize window-control and then for intentionally quitting the main program just close that command-window first.
Nice. :-)

Apparently any US fourth grader can get a free National Parks pass that gets them, their adults, and a vehicle into any park for the school year plus following summer?? everykidoutdoors.gov/index.htm

@CatherineFlick

Child play is simple to them but immensely complex at the same time.

My 1 year old son has just started making noises when he plays with cars. He doesn’t say “brrrrm” or similar, he says “eeeee”. We own electric cars.

Think of it, a future where cars, buses, trucks, tractors go “eeeee” instead of “brrrrrm” in the minds of children.

Which is why governments want an end to end 2 end encryption, even though there are groups who need it (people like reporters in some countries) and others for their work or just to keep safe from harm.

@nixCraft

I read something similar once, enginner called out to a company, one of their machines wsan't working ( probably something mechanical )

So engineer hit said machine with a hammer and got it working.

The charge for this was something lile $50 for having the right too, and $25k for knowing where to hit it.

Exactly one year ago, I made my first post on Mastodon. I uploaded the following picture and wrote:

"Just setting up my tent. Give me a few days to settle in. I have pictures... and opinions, although I haven't figured out the rules of this suburb yet, so I'm being extra nice."

I'm still here, and still being mostly nice.

OFFS.

I just read a headline in my LA Times about how anti-vaxxers also don’t want to immunize their pets against rabies.

The stupidity, cruelty, and recklessness of that mindset is beyond jaw dropping.

Both humans and animals need protection. #ProLifeMyAss, you total deluded idiots who believe otherwise.

I don't smoke, but appreciate people do. Before the actual ban came in, I proposed that my local rugby club ban smoking in doors on a sunday, which is when we have junior games. The club implemented this. But the ban was to protect kids from passive smoking.

I think people did understand, a few years later the actual ban came in anyway.

Sometimes a compromise was needed but one based on other than I just object to smoking.

I am sure a lot of businesses gained from this as it attracted customers and some stayed longer. I didn't want to be in the rugby club bar watching and England game breathing in carcinogenic smoke.

@rms

It is probably a breach of international law too. The UK can't extradite a person if they face torture or the death penalty for example, we no longer export lethal injection drugs to the USA,

Evidence obtained by torture can't be used in court.
