Facebook today tracks a staggering 3 billion people around the world. It spreads deadly disinformation at a scale never seen before. And it's essentially ruled by just one man.

What started as Mark Zuckerberg's student website in 2004, has morphed into one of the world's most dangerous corporations.

So this may sound naive ... but we could help fight Facebook simply by saying "STOP"!

I'll explain: Under European law, we have the right to demand that Facebook stop using our personal data for "direct marketing purposes" -- think of highly personalised ads and recommendations. And the law also says that Facebook can't charge us extra to exercise that right. Serious violations of data protection law could cost Facebook billions -- but authorities need evidence to act. And that's where we come in:

Meta says you can go ad-free for a monthly fee if you want, but it's the gigantic surveillance machine illegally processing our personal data that's the main problem, and the company's phoney new "pay-or-consent" offer does nothing to fix that.

Thanks for all that you do,
Vicky, Flora, Eoin and the team at Ekō

Research shows kids and teens are routinely being targeted with ads pushing diet pills, skin whitening and dangerous plastic surgeries on Facebook and Instagram. Far-right politicians around the world love using Meta's powerful advertising tools to spread hate speech and false information. And Meta's recommendation algorithms behind Facebook and Instagram -- intended to keep us hooked so we'll see more ads -- are amplifying climate denial, racism, and division.

Object to Meta (Facebook) and allow Ekō to use your email address to try to target you in May – If Facebook honours your legal rights, the ad shouldn't show up. But if it does, we'll have hard evidence that the company is ignoring our rights.

@zleap in many cases they are borrowing money from our future. In Denmark huge government bonds have been issued to finance these extraordinary circumstances.

As an earthquake hits Taiwan, so far best social media site for me to get reliable up-to-date info on what’s happening is…Mastodon.

And it’s not even close.

“US says Israel has not violated international law during Gaza war”

UK government lawyers disagree. U.S. is complicit in genocide.

"But doctors also reported treating a steady stream of children, elderly people and others who were clearly not combatants with single bullet wounds to the head or chest.
Some of the physicians said that the types and locations of the wounds, and accounts of Palestinians who brought children to the hospital, led them to believe the victims were directly targeted by Israeli troops"

We need to sanction any MPs to refuse to back this.

I understand that, it just seems they can magic huge amounts of money from thin air sometimes.

@zleap because fighting Vladimir Putin is not a free choice. The alternative to fighting Putin, is him spreading like a cancer.

The largest-ever study of #bird genomes has produced a remarkably clear picture of the bird family tree.

The study shows that most of the modern groups of #birds first appeared within 5 million years after the extinction of the #dinosaurs.

The new family tree overturns some previous ideas about bird relationships, while also revealing some new groupings.

Next time someone says, “What did you do over the weekend?” respond with, “Why? What have you heard?”

Today I'm launching a project I've been working on for several months - a browsable directory of self-hosted software:

selfh.st/blog/introducing-self

It's a supplemental tool to Awesome-Selfhosted and meant to be an alternate view focused on details that I personally find more relevant. And more importantly - it'll always be up-to-date as it's built on the dataset I use to monitor updates and releases for This Week in Self-hosted.

Feel free to reach out with feedback!

World Central Kitchen founder's response

“The air strikes on our convoy were not just some unfortunate mistake in the fog of war. It was a direct attack on clearly marked vehicles whose movements were known by the [Israeli military]. It was also the direct result of his [PM Netanyahu’s] government’s policy to squeeze humanitarian aid to desperate levels.”

Why is it the government can find USD 100 billion, and yet they can't find funds to keep road and rail infrastructure maintained. I get the impression some parts of the US infrastructure in that respect are really broken.;

@realTuckFrumper
If we did that with UK MPs all interviews would be very short indeed.
