If you live where there is a moderately dark sky at night, you can find this #constellation without too much trouble. Look for #Orion, and from there go south. The stars of #Lepus are visible to the west of the bright star #Sirius. #astronomy

The British malaise is, it seems to me, down to the fact that we've developed a political and journalistic class of utterly trivial people, with no real grounding in or understanding of any intellectual discipline: not history, not philosophy, not political theory, and most certainly not any science or technology. I'm talking mainly of the #Conservatives, of course - but by no means only of the Conservatives. >>>
Is North Dakota one of the very religious states, where the Mormon movement started. ?

Taliban has banned women from seeing male doctors AND banned women from seeking medical education to become doctors. This is a sure fire way to kill women. It’s beyond barbaric.
Moreover, Prophet Muhammad (sa) declared education incumbent upon women AND declared medical knowledge as the most worthwhile knowledge. Taliban extremists ignore that entirely—because they fear truth, justice, and empowered women.
Taliban are enemies of all humanity.
"Thinking about all the recent layoffs in tech, media, etc., and how so many of the "Nobody wants to work anymore!"/"Where'd the go-getters go?!"/"The rise of 'quiet quitting'" type articles in the past year or so overlooked the effect that the "hey, maybe we'll just lay a bunch of people off because we want to make a little extra cash" culture the business world has fostered might have on, well, everything involving worker morale/sense of loyalty/etc."
Sajid Javid calls for patients to pay for GP and A&E visits
Of course he does - it’s been the Tory end game all along. At least now they’ve dropped the pretense. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/jan/20/sajid-javid-calls-for-patients-to-pay-for-gp-and-ae-visits

Carnivorous oyster mushrooms can kill roundworms with “nerve gas in a lollipop”
"The mushrooms have evolved a novel mechanism for paralyzing and killing its nematode prey: a toxin contained within lollipop-like structures called toxocysts that, when emitted, causes widespread cell death in roundworms within minutes. Scientists have now identified the specific volatile organic compound responsible for this effect"

An inspiration to countless girls, Dr. Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian descent to go to space, a pilot, and an aerospace engineer. Chawla is pictured here on STS-107 in January 2003, two weeks before she and her crewmates perished during re-entry. #NASARemembers

The Smithsonian has made over 4 MILLION images open source! You can create, copy, distribute, etc. This is amazing!
@SecularJeffrey I still think the "Radium Condoms" aremy favourite part of the Radium Craze. "Baby, you're makin' me HOT!" "No, darling, that's the condom reaching critical mass!"
I think we need something similar to what @auschwitzmuseum are doing. So in the context of black history, A daily post of this day in Black history. So yes can cover events, such as the Tulsa Massacre, but could also cover the birthdays of important people but also events such as those involving the black women who worked at NASA and were fundamental to the space program (Amy Johnson et al).
I am from the Uk, and would find this useful, we don't celebrate MLK here like you do in the states so having the MLK day reminder was useful too.
@bleakfuture Good grief it is getting worse.
@CarolynStearns Yeaj snakes are good at camoflage too, i am sure some look like rope coils for that reason.
I remember watching a documentary on presstv (it was mentioned on fedi years ago) this is the Iranian spider tailed viper. Any animal or bird thinking the end of the snake was a tasty spider was in for a shock should they try and eat.
