It appears that billionaire Kelcy Warren essentially bribed Greg Abbott with a $1M campaign donation. I follow Texas politics and knew nothing about this… until Kelcy sued in an attempt to curtail free speech. Thanks for letting us know about what you did— and are now trying to do to the 1st Amendment— Kelcy!

Alison Clarke (Dalhousie): Lithium batteries get hot while in use and require cooling systems, and don't last as long. What if we make one that works well at high temps? They are using a new electrolyte (DMOHC) to allow more cycles at higher temps, but it's very viscous and not conductive (can't charge or discharge quickly). Mixes seem to strike a good balance, need more experiments.

Today I'm volunteering at the #ccuwip2023 conference for Canadian undergraduate women in physics taking place (hybrid) at the University of Regina. I'll share a few highlights when I can!

Keynote: Nadya Mason (U. of Illinois): the way they did this is kind of cool, there are little satellite undergraduate women in physics conferences that are happening all across the US and Canada this weekend, and all of them connected to this talk via Zoom. Talk started with a role call to a dozen or so classrooms all over the US (+ours in Canada), all full of women physics majors! COOL.

The speaker talked about her path to physics, loads of advice as a Black woman physicist

Julie Claveau (Canadian Space Agency) gave a lovely talk about her career path that went through loving the dark skies to thinking about engineering to working in a coffee shop to admin work to the Canadian Space Agency, where she's been a program manager for RADARSAT1&2 and now JWST, a super successful science missions.

There is a muppet running twitter at the moment.

@doot

I am amazed people like schools who are 'committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children' are still on twitter, at the same time they lecture young people on dangers of Andrew Tate (no issue with that) only it seems as Musk has allowed right wing bigots back on to twitter it just makes what the schools are trying to warn about a joke.

If schools want to make a stand they should simply quit twitter fully.

@louisgray

I thought the lay-offs were Alphabet, the google parent company/

Still not good either way

@rabble

No but we seem to be gaining those app developers who will bring their expertise in to helping to build Fediverse apps. So it is a win win for the fedi if that happens.

Twitter shuts down all third party apps. So I guess we aren’t going to get twitter as open source open protocol then.

Linked in is terrible, not sure what the paid service is like but you see a message 10 people have viewed profile but to figure out who you need premium.

If you're a job seeker can you really afford to do that, if you are employed and looking for opportunities then maybe you can.

I think Mastodon can do a really good linkedIn as it should be, so post you're looking for work, people will boost, post you are looking for staff and people will boost.

@kentbrew @cbroome @pluralistic This seems to have significantly worsened in the last few months.

Something similar going on on LinkedIn. A job search returns a page of a dozen paid boosted jobs with only a couple actual results mixed in randomly.

Everyone taking profits at the expense of their product-"customers".

When I got my cat I thought he was a a little dumb.
But today he pulled a shrimp magnet off the fridge to play with, then he was done with it, he PUT IT BACK ON THE FRIDGE.
