Very lucky to get a shot with so much going on telling such an interesting story. Well done.

#WildlifeWednesday ? Well, once again I have no idea what # is supposed to represent Wednesday, so as @shotsbydaz jogged my memory with his excellent photograph of Common Buzzard, here's a pic of a #Buzzard grabbing a #HenPheasant, being harassed by a #Crow, being ignored by a #Bleaty, as one does. I wasn't expecting that to happen in the field next to the farmhouse. 😜

The chance that someone integrates this into a plagiarism test and ends up failing students, or job applications, or reports, or anything else where there's some text where a false claim of plagiarism is going to be hard to prove but have severely negative consequences to the accused is going to be large, and cause a lot of problems before its worked out

I have zoom in a snap package, half the time it doesn't work or the web interface doesn;t show slides from the presenter, if I can find the room ID I can copy that in to software zoom, then struggle to manually copy the password.

I have access to a Big Blue Button instance, this 'just works' whichis really handy as at times I can offer this as a solution to video conferencing, I can't use teams, zoom but how about this, send them a link (and a link to some information) and they are usually fine.

But yes, a tutor at a recent course had the same thing, turns off at 17:00 which is fine most of the time, not so good if there is work to catch up on. Sometimes having some flexibility is a good thing. But on the understanding that you are still not contactable after a certain time of day.

@vicgrinberg ah, I see. My work email turns itself off (no notifications/app badges/unread accounts) at a certain time, so that gives me some peace.

I would never have slack, teams, etc. on my personal phone — that would be horrendous!

@DamnInteresting

Yeah, I would rather find that then what a beginner found recently an unexploded WWII bomb.

The Professor Brian Cox books on Space, astronomy and physics are excellent, they are technical but written so they are accessible to people.

Putting this out there to all of science Mastodon I can reach with hashtags: What is the most interesting book in your field in recent years that is appropriate for the scientifically literate lay reader? I usually prefer works written by scientists to those by science journalists/writers (no offense) and am interested in any and every field. ty

House cleaners and other domestic workers have long been excluded from California's health and safety protections.

Now, the state has issued new voluntary industry guidelines for people who employ domestic workers, to prevent injuries and illness. Worker advocates say it’s a critical first step. @kqed #california #labor

How would teachers in the UK react if they were told to remove books from the school or face 3rd degree felony charges and prison, the charge being equivalent to Manslaughter.

Thinking of everyone striking today & others preparing to do the same. It isn’t an easy thing to do but this sorry state of affairs must be called out. The strikes are collective effort for the greater good - sound, well-funded public services are essential to us all

#OTD in 1960, four Black university students sat down at a lunch counter in a segregated F. W. Woolworth Company store and refused to leave until they were served. They were denied service, but they came back every day for weeks with more and more people, eventually forcing desegregation in the service industry and leading to the formation of the SNCC.

When I look at Nostr (and Damus, by extension), I feel like they've learned all the *wrong* lessons about decentralization.

What makes decentralization work isn't the tech in and of itself.

It's the community that uses it.

And quite frankly, I don't like Nostr's community.

When I was a kid, we'd secretly pass around a copy of 'Scruples.' 'But we had a library stocked with books on history.

My fear is that in ten years, kids will be secretly passing around 'I Am Rosa Parks' because there are no libraries in schools, and education has turned into white nationalist indoctrination.

I cannot stress this enough. Turn your attention to school board elections. Focus on local politics. That's what the GOP did, and look at where we are. We CAN reverse this.

Given that #fascism is the melding of govt with big business, we predict that without people effectively resisting the corporate state, indeed yes, a lot of the ugly themes mentioned above will be revived. An #atomised population are easier to control. Division and hate are like roads that allows the fascism to travel.

I was just thinking this myself, not much of a coder but there is more to code than just writing code, you need to be able to actually think how and who is going to use the end code, etc. and be competent, learn and learning requires a lot more skill.

DeSantis is essentially modeling for his donors and supporters his plans to destroy public education in the United States and replace it with something more easily leveraged by private interests and propagandists. nytimes.com/2023/01/31/us/gove

@Alan
That needs to happen here too, we need to teach about Empire, BOTH the good and bad parts, the good being taking railways to the world, and our inventive and innovation history. The bad being slavery, subjugation and control of other people, the corruption in the British east india company, the partition of india, and even the creation of isreal from Palestine which was a British protectorate. Even in WWI citizens of other countries, even Africa, as they were seen as british subjects were expected and conscripted and conscripted for Empire, even though they were 1000s of miles away from the front line, if I understand this correctly this is what brought down the British Empire.

This has to be taught so that we never again end up with countries invading others and taking ownership, also teach about Spanish, French and other Empires. This then leads on to Slavery the slave trade and how people profited and gained power from this, sowed the seeds of what we have to day capitalism where a few rich people just tred on everyone else.

Now more than ever as we explore the solar system, so we do so differently and don't just claim a moon, planet or asteroid in the name of humanity and exploit it.
