Mastodon is insanely more rewarding for me than Twitter. With about a 10th of the followers, it draws almost as many views to my videos as Twitter. The platform is really, really good.

I also love the feeling of using an #opensource platform to communicate with people.

#introduction I'm a lecturer (assistant prof) at Royal Holloway University (UK). I study human perception and decision-making combining experiments and computational models. I like teaching statistics and helping others in their data modelling. I post (and sometimes blog here https://mlisi.xyz/) about #bayesian #statistics using #stan and #rstats, and #cogsci and #neuroscience in general.

Right now, it isn't obvious how you can donate to support the #mastodon instance you're on. I see admins posting their Patreon or Librepay links now and then but this isn't a standard nor is it consistent from an instance to another.

QOTO is a stem instance int he sense that we require people who join be either STEM professionals or at least enthusiasts. So if that is a fitting description then your friend is welcome.

That said we do not require the topics discussed here be only STEM.. We are a general instance in the sense that you can talk about almost anything you want here.

Naturally being a bunch of nerds many of the topics you list are very common topics here.

I think we can all agree that at this point the Fedi is now fairly main stream, there is no rush to "get here", it will only stress and frustrate people.

I am Cesar, postdoctoral researcher and Bioimage Analyst at Serpico/STED Team of Curie Institute and Inria Rennes - Bretagne Atlantique. I work in #imageanalysis of fluorescence microscopy, including #STORM and #LatticeLightSheet. In addition, I work in super resolved polarized microscopy.

I developed different images analysis workflows including 3D single particle tracking, denoising and deconvolution.

I also participate in the image processing and data management node of #FranceBioImaging, promoting #FAIR data.

If your company, media org, school, nonprofit, or fraternal organization wants to participate in the fediverse, there are two reasonable ways to do it:

1. Pay employees to run an instance.
2. Pay a hosting company such as https://fedi.monster to run an instance for you.

Making an account for an organization that has cashflow, on an instance that's run by volunteers and supported by individual contributions, is incredibly bad form.

(Maybe some instances will decide to accept organizational accounts, possibly in return for a support fee; that's on them, and I'd be happy to hear about such decisions. But it's certainly not a default expectation!)

Hello all❤️ I am so sorry for all the issues on mstdn.social the past days..

Two nights ago over 11K new people joined mstdn.social via invite links while I was asleep and this made the total active people on here to 53K.

The current issue / battle I'm fighting is to keep up with the background jobs for proccessing toots, follows, etc etc.

Please know that I'm doing my best. I've also setup an extra instance to spread the load a little on https://masto.ai

If you have any influence at a company or connections with high profile figures, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell them the best way for them to join the Fedi is to set up their own server.

At this point anyone with a large following joining an established instance will crush it & incur additional costs on a community funded server.

The EU, German government, and MIT have all joined the Fedi this way.

Another introduction post with hashtags this time. I’m a #NZJourno #Journalist at RNZ. I’m part of the In Depth team there and do #DataJournalism & longform journalism. My favourite topics are #Science, #Conservation & the #Environment. Not here to ‘mine for content’ but I found Twitter was an excellent way to connect with scientists and keep up with what they’re publishing. I’ve been doing daily NZ #Covid-19 stats for too long and run the Covid charts page at RNZ.
