I learned my lesson with Ubuntu One and the Amazon Lens debacle; the people making the big decisions about desktop Ubuntu are not to be trusted. I've been using deblobbed Ubuntu for a decade or so, in the form of Trisquel.

See if you work in tech, make a point of spending time with folk who don't, it makes what happens in tech seem even more hilarious 👍🏻

We ran an editorial at Scientific American about school start times, and a teacher and his students wrote to us with their own stories and got their school to change its schedule (!) and summer break is a great time for all school districts to fix the problem of too-early starts scientificamerican.com/article

@zleap @futurebird We're also at a point where online information is increasingly suspect and flooded with bad info. ChatGPT will confidently give you a very wrong answer, particularly on things like this.

Expert forums are probably going to get more important.

Happy Pride Month to the LGBTQIA+ Community! Amidst the celebrations, let's not forget that this year, more than ever, the community continues to face battles for survival and acceptance. I stand with you all, ready to fight for love, equality, and respect!

@zleap Well, yes. Twitter has been a lost cause in this regard for a long time.

I find the degradation of search engines, however, much more dangerous and frightening. In the early 2000s, there were lots of different search engines, and Google was not in fact my favourite of them. It got worse when it became almost impossible to do exact string searches because they started doing things like stemming words, etc, so you couldn't find something based on the fact that a very exact phrase occurred in it.

That, at least, makes technological sense (indexing is cheaper that way), but with the excuse of "use AI for everything", we've seen a simultaneous drop in the ability to use search at all in the way most of us have for years, and I don't think it's coincidental.

It's bad when big platforms are overtaken by fascists. It's worse when the only reference to encyclopedia has been, effectively.

It really is nice that #Mastodon is featured on the App Store today.

I've been noticing that a few folks at
#Apple have become more enthusiastic about the #Fediverse during the last 6 months, to the point that #iMessage now recognizes Mastodon links.

Again, more speculation from my part, but it wouldn't surprise me if Apple was considering more ways to bring Fediverse adoption to the masses.

Worth remembering that the reason Rishi and the Cabinet Office are fighting furiously to keep Johnson's WhatsApps redacted is likely nowt to do with protecting Johnson.

It's because half the government, including Rishi, were the people he was talking to.

It comes down to this:

#Fediverse was invented because the oppressed didn't like oligarchs owning and controlling the means of communication.

#bluesky was invented because one of the oligarchs wanted to get around the government telling him what to do.

#nostr was invented because crypto-scammers didn't like Fedi blocking their spam.

I mean roughly. That's probably not really fair on Nostr.

I think this command (not mine) is just so elegant. It's for generating both the private key and the public key for a Wireguard tunnel in one go.

wg genkey | tee privatekey | wg pubkey > publickey
