THIS IS REASON FOR CELEBRATION!!

“New Hampshire is now the 13th state to outlaw child marriage, after more than a decade of advocacy.”

How does coverage of a 90 (well 105, if 1/2 time is 15 mins) min soccer game that kicks off at 17:00 need to start at 16:00 and end at 19:30 hrs. That seems to equate to 3 1/2 hours. so 2 hours of waffle before and after.

No wonder non sports people get p***ed with sports coverage taking over the schedule.

It’s already too late to prevent some level of collapse. But that doesn’t mean we should give up!

Because we still have a choice, a vital choice, between (1) a world very different from our recent past, but likely survivable for a smaller population of humans, living simpler lives in closer harmony with their surroundings; or (2) a world where no humans remain at all, and millions of other species perish along with us, due to the terrible decisions we allowed our “leaders” to make.

That is what we’re fighting for now. It’s why we urgently need system change, and a pivot toward Degrowth. Because the difference between a planet 2°C above the pre-industrial baseline (still perhaps achievable) and one 3°C or 4°C above the baseline (where we’re currently headed) is huge. In fact, it’s existential.

British Medical Journal reports there has been a large post-covid global surge in common communicable diseases including influenza, measles, tuberculosis, and whooping cough. bmj.com/content/385/bmj.q1348

@simon_brooke @Natasha_Jay Absolutely agree. Even if Reform get their predicted single seat it horrifies me.

@zleap @christineburns have they pledged on the RAAC issue in schools, hospitals etc?

Infrastructure investment is needed as well, urgently.

Wrote my first proper "AI" research post in a while, pulling together some of the common threads I've been seeing

"The mainstreaming of ‘AI’ scepticism"

Physicists combine multiple Higgs boson pair studies and discover clues about the stability of the universe phys.org/news/2024-06-physicis #science

@zleap None of this is taught in schools. Before too long, students won't even be able to write, so they'll have to depend on AI. That's the whole drive of Big Tech: create dependency and addiction. Make humans incapable of living a basic daily life without the support of tech. That's the business case.

@zleap
They wanted to do all this on the cheap. All about content volume. Scraping and processing. They don't think about knowledge or facts or context or anything like that. Content is an engineering problem, and the focus is on the cheapest most automatic way to do content. And because AI is driven by advertising culture, the fact that it lies and gets things wrong is seen as a benefit; once it's making the sale.

@d2718 @emilygorcenski I'm gonna need someone with technical / scientific knowledge to weigh in on this - because yes, an explosion is the sudden release of a lot of energy & it seems intuitively right that this can happen if the density is high enough, but I'm not sure a solid-state battery can spontaneously discharge that fast... anyone?

A UN agency is warning that developments in artificial intelligence could spawn a new surge in Holocaust denial.

A report published Tuesday by UNESCO concludes that AI could result in false and misleading claims about the Holocaust spreading online, either because of flaws in the programs or because hate groups and Holocaust deniers will intentionally use AI programs to generate content that falsely calls into question the murder of Jews and other groups by the Nazis.

More than 550 hajj pilgrims die in Mecca as temperatures exceed 50C.

Utterly horrifying. We are already in the age of climate catastrophe, and any delay to action further multiplies the risks of more mass death.

I just went on a follow-fest for women with a PhD, but realized I'm already mutuals with almost everyone who shows up in the limited search results 😋

If you're a Dr. Gal or other female science communicator type, pop into the thread, say hi!

I'd love to learn about what you do 💜
(and I'm sure lots of others would too)
