Immigration sounds at first glance like something that a country can solve by itself.

But in a modern, it's a cooperative thing: Especially if you cannot shoot people coming over your border to prevent them from coming, you need to do other things, like e.g. deport people, and practically all of these require cooperation with other countries. No absolute sovereignty here the populists dream of.
