i still had an association of 'deviantart' with 'artists' but hadn't paid attention to them in many years. so i was surprised to see them on the receiving end of a lawsuit, for having an ai engine that the suit says was trained on actual artists' work. so still deviant, whether still art is questionable

"If there’s ever a definition of a company that got too big — so big it basically owns and operates the web — then surely it’s Google."

US courts declared Google an illegal monopoly; Could this be a first win for our collective #digitalprivacy ?

"A warmer climate means mosquito season is getting longer, prompting not only an increase in the pesky insects but also greater potential for them to spread diseases like West Nile virus.

To help reduce the risk In New York City, expert "insect hunters" track the summer pests among the trees and marshes of parks that residents use to escape the summer heat."

If you haven't seen already, @jaz at @iftas shared this brilliant blog yesterday: about.iftas.org/2024/08/13/fed

It's a really important, in-depth look at how we scale trust & safety on the Fedeiverse.

We've always supported the work of IFTAS, but when you read through this blog it makes you realise just how important they are in the future of this space.

Thank you IFTAS & the whole team!

I follow a great selection of #maths #teachers on twitter, but most are either not jumping ship or they're going to BlueSky or (yuck) Threads.

I lament their loss from my timeline and feel that if I were to find some more excellent people here I might be able to coax a few over, so...

If you're a teacher...
... especially of maths...
... and especially in the #UK...

I'd love it if you'd make yourself known.

[And if you're not any of these things I'd love it if you'd...
a) Let me know what we _do_ have in common (if you're interested in connecting with me)
b) Boost me in case you have some people who are those things in your networks

One of the key issues that Labour will need to resolve is how to match their aspirations to expand the construction of (social) housing with the geographical and demographic 'housing need'... but as Alex Lord (ULiverpool) notes, currently housing need is a crude & undifferentiated metric to work from.

Really assessing & then targeting a more nuanced depiction of housing need, should help Angela Rayner deliver on her promise(s) & get the right dwellings built!

Where #celiac begins. This article is a bit odd because they say things like:

"The only way we can treat celiac disease today is by fully eliminating gluten from the diet," says McMasters gastroenterologist Elena Verdu. "This is difficult to do, and experts agree that a gluten-free diet is insufficient."

Yes it's difficult, but I've never heard you need to do more than not eat gluten.

"....research team double-checked the expression of the major immune complex in the cells lining the intestines of people with treated and untreated celiac disease, and in mice with the human genes for HLA-DQ2.5."

Wait. Treated celiac disease? They just said that there kind of was no treatment because the only way to treat it was insufficient to treat it.

The richest company in the world (congrats guys, you’re back on top) being fucking rent-seeking pieces of shit isn’t going to earn your precious services more $$$, it’s just going to convince a whole new generation of users to avoid the App Store for all payments and have a distaste towards your brand. mastodon.social/@caseyliss/112

There are folks who still, to this day, won't touch Microsoft products because of Microsoft's behavior in the 90s — nearly 30 years later. People have long memories. Apple today makes 90s Microsoft look like a saint
