@mur2501 Me?? I'm not an admin here. You'd best ask @freemo , I'm sure he can.

@freemo
Well nothing was just asking if others can add it or not :ablobcatangel:

Ahh ok, well no just admins, and im the only one. we have several other moderators but they arent administrators (which gives system level access basically).

@freemo
Ohh, so there can be more then one admin? :ablobaww:
I thought it could only be one
@trinsec

@mur2501

Since i never tried to make anyone else an admin I'm not actually sure.

@trinsec

@freemo
What wonders will happen with two :ablobaww:
Lets have an admin election :ablobblewobble:
@trinsec

@freemo What? You had a split personality a long time ago?

I admit that kinda explains some things... πŸ˜‹

ATTENTION :blobcatstop:

qoto.org has become an authoritarian dictatorship rule by Chief General Lord Sir @freemo :blobcatsalute:

:blobfoxsnugterrified:

@mur2501 No, every admin is getting some sort of digital sword (a very cool one!) and try to kill each other while shouting 'THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!'. Don't listen to him! Multi-admin instances are doomed, I tell you! DOOMED!
@freemo

@trinsec @mur2501 @freemo Surely a 2nd admin is also a backup in case something happens to the main admin of a site.

@zleap

Indeed. In reality I have no objection to naming someone an admin just in case. But it would require more than just mastodon admin access, which in and of itself cant really do or effect much. In fact a mastodon admin couldnt even backup and migrate the site to another server, they can just pretty much upload emojis and change a few settings.

What we would need is someone who would have access to our server infrastructure. Right now I do have some people who i pay who have that access in case of emergencies but they arent really part of the community here.

That said if we picked a member of the community to have server access in case something happens to me they would have to know how to administer linux, docker, docker-swarm, and a few other techs we use. They would also need to be trust worthy of course.

I believe @arteteco offered to fill that role once, and he has been around since the inception of the server, so I would trust him in that capacity. I guess it depends on if he would want that responsibility and if he feels he has the technical knowledge to carry it out.

@trinsec @mur2501

@freemo
I'm honored but at the moment it would be too much for me, and I'm not entirely comfortable in all of those techs. With some I'm alright, some others I've never used, like docker-swarm.

So far there was never a need for it anyway, and while redundancy in access is good it also adds attack surface so I'm pretty good where I stand!

If the only matter is having someone to add a few emoticons, though, that I could do! 😁

@zleap @trinsec @mur2501

@arteteco

I think the concern is just if someone winds up assassinating me someone has the ability to pass the server along to whoever takes over it. I doubt it will be an issue anytime soon.

@zleap @trinsec @mur2501

@freemo
For one community I manage I had the same problem.

I have a few stuff written down in case I die, and in there I wrote the instructions to access all relevant places to backup and manage such communities, messages to write to users and some money to pay someone to do the technical stuff, asking please to find a trustworthy successor to take over.

That's what I did instead of entrusting someone else with all the passwords!

Hope it never happens to anyone... but it can happen
