“All models are wrong, but some are useful” — George E. P. Box

Most useful and insightful quote I added to my quotes file last year.

Most of my embroidery is intuitive in that I pick colors and sometimes a stitch and then I just let the threads talk to each other. If anyone speaks “thread,” I’d love a translation cuz these had something to say.

people really don't be knowing how HIPPA actually works

my #printersolstice #linocut of #astronomer Vera Rubin (neé Cooper, ‘28-‘16) & her discovery that angular motion of galaxies deviates from predictions, 1st evidence for dark matter, now known as 5x as common as matter & the stuff which dictates dynamics of galaxies & evolution of our universe! The Nobel committee waited 3 years after she died to reward another for the theory of dark matter.

I heard Cory Doctorow talking about the fediverse on NPR ("Here & Now"). He actually described it and some of its advantages/features although he didn't link them too strongly to the fediverse itself. I wonder if that distance was intentional...

Every day I wake up to more environmental storytelling in a post-apocalyptic video game

I wonder if it's just the people I've worked with, but security and compute infrastructure people tend to preferentially refer to hosts by their IP address rather than host name. always seemed counterintuitive to me since the host name is usually the more stable identifier

Wow, there's innovation in propeller shapes (which i thought we're close to optimal for a century): toroidal propellers newatlas.com/aircraft/toroidal >50% performance improvement at midrange rpms in liquids!

Why aren’t there hardware security keys that can be worn like jewelry? Especially jewelry you never take off, like a ring or bracelet?

Nature is full of surprises. Meet Costasiella kuroshimae, an adorable species of sea slug known as “leaf sheep.”

At no more than 8mm, these tiny ocean critters graze on algae & keep chloroplasts in their bodies for up to 10 days. They supplement their diet through photosynthesis to create energy, which is why they’re sometimes referred to as “solar-powered sea slugs.” bbc.com/travel/article/2021032 #nature #science

Attempting to gauge interest, so please boost outside of my (rather small) circle:

Would there be any interest in a (largely menu based) game about the fantasy adventuring life.

A bit like Skyrim meets the Oregon Trail.

You explore the world, helping people with quests and general adventuring, all while having to hunt for food, manage energy and maintain equipment.

Goal would be to replace fancy graphics/3d movement with lots of depth and content.

Questions and criticisms welcome.

there is no reason to limit "cheating" in single player games. let them do whatever they want

There's something alternately humbling and exciting about how, probably unless you're doing truly cutting edge science, some SF writer has probably already thought of your idea and generated use cases for it to tell a story.

I guess I can talk about this now?

An online reading with myself, @zzclaybourne , @marthawells , Linda Addison, Charlie Jane Anders, Patty Templeton, LaShawn Wanak, Maria Dong, Carlos Hernandez, and C. S. E. Cooney.

It's gonna be delicious. I am thrilled to be included.

BTW, my selection will contain Sufficient Rat. No, not sufficient by your standards. Sufficient by *mine.* :blobratheart: :ratstand: :blobrat_tongue:

100% free, but prereg required to keep out the trolls.

So the day after I got a neutral density filter, I took the camera out to see what that sucker could do in broad daylight.

An ND-8 only gives you 3 stops of darkness, which in daylight is enough to capture *some* motion blur, but only if you push other settings to the max to slow the shutter down (i.e. ISO 80, f/38).

This was the result: 1/4 of a second of water hitting a crystal paperweight.

Add 3 minutes to retrieve the ball from the ocean after the wave carried it away.
