Hi all, brand new here, but excited to see what's going on! I'm an ecologist and conservation scientist at the University of York. I'm expecting to share occasional thoughts about conservation, hopefully more often supplemented with gratuitous picture of birds - here's a sleepy African Scops Owl to start with.

📣 For fellow Mastodon rookies - I understand that ‘favouriting’ things doesn’t amplify them to your followers in the way that ‘liking’ would have on Twitter

So if you want to share something, you need to ‘boost’ it

Trying to get my head round a different threshold for sharing things on here!

Rather amused at progressive pundits / academics who despair at Mastodon's federated (& open source) network, who are finding out for the first time that all social change is also infrastructural change. Yep, one must leave the "platform" to upend platform capitalism

Together with a group of stellar professors in the UK and US, I've co-authored an article for the Chronicle of Higher Education on #LongCovid

In this, we highlight how universities could provide more strategic support to all of us with chronic health issues including a rethink of medical evaluation, wide reaching and flexible accommodations, peer-to-peer support and tackling academia's culture of #ableism.

I still need to setup and take "finished" pictures and varnish it, but i feel this is pretty much done.

My first commission (for a friend's sister) - Pilot Moya from #farscape. Not a show I have actually watched, but judging by many reactions to this, maybe I should 😂

Lots of fun working with #osl on this, and kind of challenging finding good reference photos.

#Introduction

I'm a maths teacher in a Worcestershire middle school. Currently interim deputy head. Im a member of the chartered college and a Chartered Teacher (leadership)

I'm trialling a social platform move from twitter.

I post a daily post which is mostly a stoic plan for myself but also an invitation to others to share.

I'm a devoted father & husband; I like chatting about education in general, maths education and school leadership in particular.

I like maths, running & playing music

An #introduction, in the form a little thread about our recent papers.

But first: we are a #Biodiversity lab, working with #MachineLearning, #Supercomputers, and good old-fashioned markers on a glass wall (yes, we do have one of these, and yes, it is as awesome as you think).

More importantly, we are an #OpenScience, people-over-productivity, inclusive lab, with very public values: poisotlab.io/values/

Hello! I'm a researcher in & for . My current obsession / reading is projective geometry.

Hey gang! I’m a plant and ecosystem ecologist studying drylands mostly in the SW US. Interested in climate and land-use ecological responses, restoration, & plant-soil interactions. Here to make science connections and learn about the cool research you’re doing.

#introductions hello everyone! Looking forward to a new social space with a more inclusive aim. I am a professor at UCLA in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology. We work on community assembly, species coexistence, and functional ecology. I have long standing interest in tropical forest dynamics, floristics and biogeography, and more recently, annual serpentine grasslands close to home here in Southern California. #ecology #globalchange #equity #academia

#Introduction - I am an #evolutionary #biologist studying the early evolution of #family life and #social life (mainly) in #insects.

The methods I use typically involve #behaviours, #immunity (social immunity), #ecotoxicology (#anthropic effects), and #quantitativegenetics.

My main study system is the #earwig (#Dermaptera), a fantastic but little-known taxon.

I am a very strong defender of #OpenScience

Hello new social media site. I’m transitioning over from the bird site. I’m Danielle. I study relationships between the #carboncycle #cliamte change and terrestrial #ecosystem stability. I test hypotheses using vertebrate #paleontology and stable #isotope #geochemistry. My dissertation research focuses on the end-Triassic mass extinction record in South Africa. I’m getting ready to defend my PhD in May 2023, so I’m actively job hunting. Pray for me.

Hello! I'm an Associate Professor of Psychology at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. I study moral development, gender, and research ethics. I'm co-chair of SIPS, so I care a lot about #OpenScience .

I'm still trying convince my husband and kids to try Mastodon.

"A group of #EU policy professionals is trying to coordinate an exit from #Twitter."

"They're moving to #Mastodon."

"One new group hosted on Mastodon servers — dubbed "eupolicy.social" — aims to provide a “friendly and respectful discussion space for people working in the field of EU policy.”"

Hello!

After a few days figuring out Mastodon with the help of the folks at QOTO, I will formally introduce myself in order to pin this in my profile :)

My name is Abde and I am a computer scientist. My main domain is and . I am currently a PhD student at the Université Libre de Bruxelles () and working on porting numerical solvers for simulations on the GPU using . You may find my first paper here: etna.math.kent.edu/vol.55.2022

I also work as a developer. My current professional interests are . We also contribute in several projects. Most of my work is done in , so feel free to ask any questions!

As a hobby I do some and also . I will share some snippets of what I do here, but for now I am focusing in crafting my art by producing in .

Please enjoy! I am not the most active but I am looking to build my Mastodon network, so feel free to follow and I will follow back :)

scientificamerican.com/article articles like this express why I'm uncomfortable with much of library led information literacy. It seems to me there isn't enough emphasis on the processes and uncertainty of doing science and a lot more focus on looking out for signals like "peer review", "Predatory journal" without proper nuance
