I've been cooking regularly for like twenty years. I'm decent with a kitchen knife, but I don't think I'll *ever* be able to do that rapid chopping you see chefs do in the movies. At least not without losing a thumb.

If Trump wins in November and Rs get control of Congress, I would not be shocked if they decided to expand the Supreme Court. Everything Dems are afraid to try because they cling to the delusion that it will make Rs be better, Rs will do without even blinking

@esther@strangeobject.space Is this really new, though? Or is it the same segment of lazy students who previously resorted to academic dishonesty and cliff notes just finding a path of less resistance?

Was planning to do some flying this morning, but it looks like mother nature has other plans...

I wonder if there's a measurable correlation between regularly driving in rush hour and general misanthropy.

@Lyle We do have bollards in many places, especially public transport hubs. But you can't put them everywhere.

@Lyle What? How would you even do that?

That's like trying to prevent all murder. It's not possible.

The best you can do is punish it after-the-fact with sentences that deter others from following suit.

@fembot @vansice @mekkaokereke Sure, in theory, you can negotiate anything you want into your contracts.

The only problem with that is that, the more demanding you are in negotiations, the more likely the company is to just move on to the next most desperate candidate.

So, unless the industry stands together, a model will have to deal with reduced opportunity in exchange for standing up for their morals (which, again, is true of most business).

@fembot @vansice @mekkaokereke Right, but you can also do the opposite; have a contract that only allows very narrow uses and disallows all others.

@erosalie Or we should actually uphold free speech ourselves and not hold it ransom for our own citizens to try to impose our values on others.

@fembot @vansice @mekkaokereke They can, but they're not required to.

Models have every right to negotiate their contract to specifically forbid certain uses. But, in doing so, they run the risk of losing the work in question.

Which is not so different than any other business. 🤷‍♂️ I regularly lose out on business opportunities due to my refusal to work with cryptocurrency technologies.

@vansice @mekkaokereke That's how it *has* to happen, legally. You can't sign away your likeness without a document telling you who will own it and how they can use it. If you don't like the buyer or the terms, you don't sign.

@vansice @mekkaokereke Easy. By someone else (or a document) saying "here's what's going to happen."

@vansice @mekkaokereke Why not? So long as the ask was not deceptive, free adults should be free to sell their image for such purposes.

@mekkaokereke It's a little new-fangled and weird, but everyone consented, so it seems fine to me.

@jtlg Would an American government allow Meta to be sold to the Chinese? It's a ridiculous ask either way.

@carnage4life Shocking as it may be, the best way to ensure the longevity of one's business is apparently *not* to sell it to one's competitors.

@JoshuaHolland I don't understand why any judge would ever be on a case where the criminal defendant is the same person who appointed them to the bench.

That seems like a pretty gross violation of justice on its own.
