To EVERYONE in the sciences. STEM kids, computer science, all of you coding geniuses. Pre-med, Med and anyone who beat organic chemistry year 2. Physics. Astrophysics (my dream if I could math consistently). Engineering. Electrical engineering and theory. All of it.

This society exalts the lowest common denominators in culture, often. But I want you to know YOU are the real and true heroes. People who make REAL impact and change. I am grateful for your genius brains, and everything you do.

I am mindful at this moment of the many ways in which Mitch McConnell corrupted the institutions of the Senate and the courts and the democracy of America with his cynical nihilism and power. Good riddance. And whoever the republicans appoint next will be even worse.

IDK why I feel like ranting about this but here it goes...

As politcs are bound to heat up this year, please remember that "just leave" isn't an option for many LGBTQ+ people. Even if it's well-meaning, telling another person you only know from the internet that the solution to them being scared of US politics is to leave X toxic state may only worsen their pain.

For one thing, a good city in a bad state is often better than a bad town in a good state. Trans people have been living semi-illegally for centuries and often what matters is the people who immediately surround you, not the king on the throne. I'd much rather live in Austin, Atlanta, or Miami than some town in the middle of nowhere Illinois.

Also, leaving implies a hell of a lot of privilege. It costs money to leave. It costs spoons to leave. It may cost jobs or family or any number of other things to leave. They may be dependent on caregivers who aren't easily replaced. They may have a kid they'll never see again if they leave. Not everyone can leave.

Third, there are hundreds, thousands of young trans people in those "bad" places that are going to come out in 2025, even if only to themselves. They need representation. They need local trans and gender diverse get-togethers. I certainly can't claim to be very good at local representation but I do hope that, every so often, some kid in the grocery store sees my purple hair and feels a little more safe.

For those who can and who want to move to somewhere safer, we should 100% support them. Bring out those GoFundMe's. Let's help them get to safety.

But don't assume that's everyone. 💜
