I tried going into profile settings via web on my phone, it shows me a whole new set of options. I have a few questions wrt options and usage.
1. What is profile metadata supposed to be? It says Label and Content, where does this show up?
2. List account on directory (that I checked on recommendation) - where can this be seen? How do I access said directory if I'm looking for interesting accounts to follow?
3. I read somewhere that specific hashtags can be followed by clicking on the follow button that appears next to the hashtag upon searching. I tried this on both web and Android app and somehow cannot see any option to follow a hashtag (eg #photography), is there something I'm missing here?

Following tags can be done in mobile apps too, but the app has to be updated to support the new features in Mastodon 4.0. The "official" Mastodon app seems to be the slowest to do so for some reason.
@DopeGhoti I'm afraid I'm on the official Mastodon app, I guess I'll have to wait then 😔😏
@juergen_hubert ah! I suppose that's why I cannot follow hashtags.
Thanks for clarifying!
@NehaKhazanchi Yup, your instance still seems to be using v3.2.1.
@juergen_hubert ah, that explains it. Same with the edit button, people seem to be talking about the edit button I can't see it though. (Editing posted toots I mean).
@NehaKhazanchi I don't know at which version editing was introduced to Mastodon.
Try it in the web interface - it should be among the "three dot" options to the lower right.
@juergen_hubert yes I did try on web too, can't see it anywhere.
@NehaKhazanchi That's too bad. I hope your instance admins will update soon!
@juergen_hubert I'm sure they will, thanks for helping! 🙂
@juergen_hubert @NehaKhazanchi
Qoto is *based* on Mastodon v3.2.1, but it's actually a fork i.e. @freemo took the code and added a lot of features (incl. the Markdown support, quote posts, etc.) in Qoto's branch of the code, so the version number doesn't tell the full story. In this case, I believe Qoto added hashtag-following before the main Mastodon code did, you can find it at https://qoto.org/settings/follow_tags or going Preferences -> Follows and Subscriptions -> Following hashtags
@freemo @digital_carver @juergen_hubert wonderful, thankyou!
@digital_carver @juergen_hubert @freemo I suppose these features are available on web and not on apps are they?
Quote posts sounds interesting, exactly like Quote Tweet I assume?
Same idea, yes... and unfortunately you can only access it on web yes.
@NehaKhazanchi @digital_carver @juergen_hubert @freemo
Qoto through mobile web is worth it! The only issue is the notification alerts. But I guess that's a blessing in disguise (atleast for me)
I use the web client on my mobile, works great.
@NehaKhazanchi @mastodonindians @freemo
1. This shows up on your profile. This can be a blog link for example. See my profile or others. This can also be used to verify a particular domain belongs to you and you are its owner.
2. Have not checked the second one myself.
3. Yes it is possible to follow hashtags. In Tusky android app, this can be done by going to Account Preferences -> Tab -> Clicking on the + button to add a hashtag tab and add hashtags you want to follow.
1. Thanks for clarifying that.
3. I'm on the official Mastodon app, I guess I'll have to wait.
@NehaKhazanchi
1. The meta data shows up in the profile page. In my profile I've chosen to display my location, languages, views and interests. You can choose to show your custom meta data.
2. Pass
3. See the attached screenshot where the #MastIndia tag is being viewed. Next to the Back link you see an icon (that looks like a person). That's the follow/unfollow button to follow this hashtag. Posts from followed hashtags will appear in your home TL.
@mastodonindians @freemo
1. That's interesting, I'll look into updating mine.
3. From what I have read on other comments, it depends on whether your instance has said feature. Mine doesn't.
@NehaKhazanchi @ravisambamurthy Exactly its actually a new feature introduced in Mastodon. Your instance needs to upgrade soon. You will see quite a lot of features were added after the recent birdsite exodus.
@NehaKhazanchi your instance does have some customizations, ask your instance admin for clarity. You will know their handle in your server's about page. Although i personally I feel it easier to catch up with hashtag(s) in their own column(s). hashtag columns allow multiple hashtags so you can refine.
@ravisambamurthy
@NehaKhazanchi seeing that people have answered 1 and 3 already, 2 means the explore tab openable via web on your phone (the hashtag on the right) will show your profile in the different tabs, directly in the For You tab for recommendations to others and within hashtags
@mehluv ah, that isn't available on the mastodon official app I suppose
@NehaKhazanchi oh the official app is actually the worst one, Tusky and Fedilab are better alternatives and the easiest best one is the web browser version
@mehluv both Android apps?
@NehaKhazanchi yeah but if you want to try Fedilab I'd recommend getting it from F-Droid, otherwise Tusky is the app of choice, easily has the best UX of the bunch
@mehluv I'll go with Tusky then. I think when moving from bird app to here the natural thing to do is to goto the app Store and download the official app. Takes a while to understand this space and how it actually works.
@NehaKhazanchi @mehluv yes follow on official app not available try tusky
@NehaKhazanchi 2. https://qoto.org/explore https://mastodon.social/directory etc - server-specific profiles directory is visible on the footer (where links to about the server, privacy policy et al reside)
@sudipto woah, how do I find this on the official mastodon app?
@NehaKhazanchi not sure how to do it on the app as i use tusky on phone (its not there too), but on the web version - its v much accessible
@sudipto I will check it out, thanks!
@NehaKhazanchi @mastodonindians @freemo 1. These are basically custom fields that show up in your profile.
3. Activating hashtags is currently only possible via the web interface, and only if your instance has updated to Mastodon 4.0.
No idea about 2.
