@freemo
I understand now. Yes, I was just referring to that specific rhetorical argument that the guy made, not the actual conclusion, which flows from many other considerations and separate arguments.
I haven't actual thought about it enough to reach an opinion one way or another, but my instinct is to just allow people the freedom to disclose or not to disclose their vaccination/health info and allow others the freedom to include or exclude people -- but there are likely many other considerations (such as discrimination based on health status)...
@freemo
Maybe this reverse argument will help...
"Disclosing your vaccination status in negative and harmful because it can prevent you from attending events or getting a job."
"Disclosing your health history is positive and beneficial because it can get you discounts on life insurance and make you more appealing to potential employers."
@freemo @Faket
Yeah, I guess that makes the depictions on TV even worse,. If TV guns are all that people ever see, then they get a distorted picture of them -- they think gun violence is more prevalent, or they don't realize the real life power of guns and the consequences of gun violence, since most people who are shot on TV (usually "bad guys") are depicted as "disposable" characters who are just shown grabbing their chest and falling over, whereas in real life all those people would have had families and friends and children who would grief their lost, and many other tragic consequences that are not usually shown on TV and film..
@freemo @Faket
I guess it depends on where you live and lifestyle. In a nice area of a large, densely populated city, it's true that you wouldn't often see a gun, except maybe those carried by law enforcement.
I live in area where I hear gunshots almost every weekend, and I think "Oh, there's somebody having some quality time with their kids plinking cans." Whereas someone who lives in an urban setting who hears gunshots may think, "Oh no, the gangs are battling it out again."
@freemo @Faket
Gun ownership in the US is actually very high, much more than 50%, but gun violence is much rarer than depicted on TV. It's nearly impossible to watch TV for some period of time without seeing gun violence. However, responsible gun use is almost never depicted on TV.
You'd think that people who oppose gun violence would want TV programs to help inform people about the safe use of guns, but they don't.
@freemo
It's a type of rhetorical fallacy, I think. He said that disclosing your vaccine status is a positive thing because it allows you to do something (e.g., attend events, get a job), whereas when he talked about disclosing other heath info he phased it in the negative (it prevents you from getting a job, etc.) Actually they are both either negative or positive depending on how the preposition is stated, so they are logically equivalent -- but he favored the one case just because it was stated in the positive. (The two may have qualitative differences, but their logical consequence (e.g., being able to get a job, etc.), are the same.)
Can you spot the fallacy of this guy's (Caplan's) argument about the so called "vaccine passport"?
The fallacy is probably easy to spot but I can't figure out how to classify it. (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fallacies)

There is a real world analogy to this (perception of a gun firing and arrival of the bullet). When a high-powered sniper rifle is fired, the bullet travels at supersonic speed, so someone near the target will see (the effect of) the bullet arriving before they hear the sound of the gun shot or hear the bullet's sonic boom.

Yeah, rationality works just as good as fear (for most people).
@freemo
Specific phobias are one of the more treatable mental disorders. Usually by gradual desensitization, which sounds like what you did with scuba diving. Although we have fear for a good reason, so I'm not sure you'd want to extinguish that one!
In a previous toot I showed a segment from CSPAN that had the audio pitch lowered and it sounded funny and disturbing.
The problem was with my browser's user agent, which had been set to Windows and Chrome. (My browser is actually FireFox running on Linux) When I changed the user agent back, it fixed the problem.
This is what the video is supposed to sound like. (from the 2021/02/26 show)
