Unsurprisingly, groups that oppose research-backed prevention efforts are using the study's publication as an opportunity to equate fantasies and inanimate objects to real abuse and living breathing children, minimizing abuse and doing a disservice to survivors.

Primary prevention is less about reacting to sex abuse and more about knowing how and why abuse happens, and ensuring people receive the support they need before people harm children. Bystander intervention is one practical example of this.
