The ability to research family history and disease risk shouldn’t carry the risk that our data will be accessible to police and used in ways we never could have foreseen. At a minimum, law enforcement should have to get a warrant to access this data. eff.org/deeplinks/2018/05/dist

i am all in favor of punching nazis, i just don't think that a boring conservative little jewish man like ben shapiro is a nazi. does this make me alt right?

politics economics

@hugoestr this makes sense. I've often heard advocates of both systems say their system has never been tried in a pure form. What would your examples be of successful capitalist and socialist countries?

I'm just finding out about the trending hash tag. I recall the headlines when the first lady hadn't made a public appearance for 20 days, she isn't a judge (or an appointed or elected person at all) whereas Ginsburg is.

The only major media reports I can find are about how terrible people are for mentioning that Ruth hasn't appeared for many days.

I'm not proposing this is a conspiracy, just evidence of the overall media bias: when the issue is a non leftist, the story is about how bad the non leftist is. When the issue is a leftist, the story is about how bad the non leftists are for reacting to it.

@doctorow I didn't realize that the FBI is composed largely of right-wing, authoritarian ideologues, thought I've never studied it read too much on it. Do you think that this is due to the nature of the job and authority carried by the FBI?

I wonder what that says of what I read about the FBI's opposition to the current president.

After the polarizing presidential election, with members of both major parties wanting their parties to move away from the left, Democrats are intent on chasing people away by partying over legalizing infanticide, eroding states rights, and hiking taxes.

@seven1m The only difficulties I've had so far with the flip-over for my reading journal:
1. I tend to read more than 1 book at a time, but would like to keep my notes together per-book. Not sure how to do this well.
2. Page numbers: They're all upside down and I'm not quite sure how the best way is to index them on my table of contents.

@RomeoTBravo Well hey, I'm glad to have helped out!

in particular and in general is great for having a list of fascinating folks to follow.

@RomeoTBravo My initial reaction is that as a software developer, I don't tend to rely on grip strength. My livelihood doesn't rely on the strength of my fingers - at least now that I've switched to a mechanical keyboard.

One thing I found entertaining in the article: "Gripping is part of a long story in which we have been getting weaker for millions of years." -- I'm so glad we have millions of years of data to work with on this.

I'm more concerned with our grip on reality than our grip on a pull up bar. We see to have lost a grasp on objective reality and reason, which seems more significant for humanity than how long we can grip a tree branch.

Disclaimer: The article is very long, and having to scroll through the whole thing was just too hard for my weak 21st century grip so I didn't get through the whole thing.

Woohoo! I was sad because I didn't make the cut for my own instance's profile directory. You have to have 10 followers. I had 7.

I scoured the list of people @SecondJon follows, followed a bunch of them and got a few follows back. Now I'm on the directory!

Thanks to @SecondJon for the list of fascinating folks to follow. Thanks to those who followed back.

And pardon the laziness that has me doing anything to get followers except ... well ... you know ... actually posting something interesting. ;)

Surveillance across the board

I don't like the term "surveillance capitalism" that seems to be gaining usage. Google/Facebook and the rest of the privacy-smashing ad industry are only a part of the problem. State surveillance is a MUCH bigger problem.

You can protect yourself against tracking by the ad industry to a great degree by various blocking methods, and by and large they work.

You can not protect yourself against your own government putting up cameras everywhere, with an ever-increasing remit on what they can be used for.

Where I live every single politicial party(*) is pro ANPR cameras, with all the standard lies: they'll catch criminals on the run in their cars! Once they're deployed, it's just a minor decision to allow this or that organization access.

(*) Ok, except one party: the communists. They want the cameras, but employ half the population to watch displays 24/7 for suspicious behavior. Because of course.

@Trillenial this is my concern with HOW global warming is presented and discussed. It all seems to lead to a global fascist regime, which makes one wonder if that's the real goal VS. proper stewardship of the environment.

'Companion' comes from 'panis', the Latin word for bread. Originally, the word was used to describe someone with whom you shared a meal.

@seven1m
Yes, the key for me is simplicity. I don't water color paint my future log or calligraphy my month overview. I don't even know all the standard bullets and meanings.

I'm on my third bullet journal now, the biggest help in the journal is to have the pages pre numbered. Mine are dotted, not lined, except for the first few lined pages for the table of contents.

Each bullet journal is different as I tweak the setup each time, and often vary how I track /log things as time goes on with a journal. The flexibility is key for me.

Newest change for me : flipping it over, upside down and starting from the back door my reading journal. Then all my reading notes are in one place, rather than mixed in with daily logs. Haven't perfected this yet, but I think it's useful.

Tried it at my wife's suggestion, she is a Franklin Covey user...or she was, until she saw my success bullet Journaling. Now we both have bullet journals.

WTF is wrong with Democrats

RT @KyleKashuv@twitter.com

The truth is out, and it is undeniable.

This is the Democratic Party’s position: you can kill your baby a minute before its born.

For a party that virtue-signals protecting the powerless, they have done the complete opposite to those most vulnerable.

Disgusting. twitter.com/vahousegop/status/
