Wow! Great Atlantic article about a study showing the social media view of the clean cut political divide in the US is inaccurate. The majority have so much to agree on. CW for length of a few quotes from the article.
From the article :
On social media, the country seems to divide into two neat camps...Reality is nothing like this. As scholars Stephen Hawkins, Daniel Yudkin, Miriam Juan-Torres, and Tim Dixon argue... most Americans don’t fit into either of these camps. They also share more common ground than the daily fights on social media might suggest.

In a democracy, it is difficult to win fellow citizens over to your own side, or to build public support to remedy injustices that remain all too real, when you fundamentally misunderstand how they see the world.
I know Trump drama is in the news as if he's literally Hitler; meanwhile a communist government is ratcheting up a crackdown on Christians, Muslims, and other religious citizens, demanding loyalty to the ruling party alone.
Looking through old toots now, and noticing more news stories of China 's government b teaching dangerous lies about Christianity and tracking who in what cities are Christians. What could go wrong?

the administration prosecuted leakers, shutout the media, and used lie-detectors on staffers, criticized by NYT Washington correspondent as "the most closed, control freak administration I’ve ever covered"
This was the Obama admin.
It's increasingly seeming as if the problems brought with Trump aren't problems (just hysteria for news viewership) or weren't brought with Trump.

Neither political party is in a particularly strong position to campaign on addressing the national debt.

Uspol 2020 speculation
@SecondJon It feels like trump has way more support this time around. Plus liberals just doubled down on the stuff that drove people away from them int he last election. Because of this I see a decent chance for trump to win. I wish he wouldnt, though im not sure the democrats have anyone better, but I really do hope trump doesnt win, but he likely will based on the current picture.
Uspol 2020 speculation
I think Trump's personality was in everyone's calculations last presidential election. We know he's a jerk to his perceived opponents. The main attack on Trump my the bulk of the media and the democrats (but I repeat myself) seems to be this. But everyone already knew that. I don't expect Trump has lost voters because of this.
Meanwhile, the democrats are changing, in more openly being farther and farther left. I don't think this gains them voters, maybe they've lost voters.
Trump had no political track record, but now he does, and has done things that many like : employment numbers have never been better, possible momentum with North Korea, cutting regulation. So...
I think Trump gains votes for 2020. But I think the far left candidate gets better turn out than Clinton did. That's not difficult.
I think the left leadership of the media (traditional and social) know this as well, hence the efforts to silence anyone who voices anything but unthinking support of whatever new idea is put out as leftist, and slandering everyone as a nazi fascist.
I'm curious to see how that balances out.
I'm interested in being just not civil, but excellent in interacting with others of different viewpoints in an online world where we can so viciously defend our echo chambers and be so dismissive of other perspectives.
Because this is less and less possible here, I'm largely offline and am not sure if I'll be returning. It was fun back when civility was a trend on qoto.
