@freemo Hi, Freemo! Great to be here, thank you.

I'm just a dude living a life in Tel Aviv. I'm no expert when it comes to STEM, and certainly not professionally educated in any such field but I am certainly a fan.

Outside of my interest in general knowledge, I'm into gaming, table top role playing, and have been a member of the telnet based Mu* (Mush/Mud/Mux) online Roleplaying communities for just about two decades now.

I'm big into discussing different topcs, always happy to learn something new, and share my own personal experiences and knowledge with any and everyone.

@Surasanji @freemo
So good to have you! We just starded an DnD group using Roll20.

@commandelicious I'm pretty into that stuff. My times are wonky, though. My job faces the US, so I work what amounts to US Central Time. Keeps me up all night- but I've worked nights for such a long time that is second nature.

@Surasanji I've been seven years on CET/CEST/GMT+1/2 night shifts. it's 19:41 and I am just starting my days most productive/awake phase.
For : It's the first group I ever had. I am more of a scifi guy but roleplay is about the people you play with. :)

@commandelicious Yeah, I'm only about an hour ahead of you. As for DnD- one of the great things about DnD is you can always set it in any realm you really want it to be. You can totally sci-fi up your elves or dwarves. Take the stats, call them something else. Bang.

I've always loved the old standards, but you've got things from the old days like Spelljammer (Magical space ships!) and Planescape (Multiverse playground!)

One of the best things about Roleplaying as a hobby is it has those hints of old communal story-telling. The camp fire is now just a map-board, and instead of fresh deer liver we get tuna sandwiches. :P

@Surasanji Hi great to meet you! I actually have an old-school mud I'm currently writing. Open-source of course. So cool to have you to geek out with sometime.

@freemo Very cool. So you're making your own hardcoded Mud? Very nice stuff- based on any particular present code?

I'm usually playing Mushes/Muxes these days- more RP heavy is my style versus the old school Pre-MMO grindy stuff.
Still, that's where I started, in MUDs. They'll always have a special place in my heart- I'm just story driven at the end of the day.

In the Mush/Mux sphere ARES (Not open source, as far as I'm aware: aresmush.com/ ) and Evennia ( github.com/evennia ) are the new hotness in code bases. The hobby really needs a new infusion of technology to attract new hobbyists, I think. I can also get you in touch with some of the folks who create those code shells, such as RHOST (Which is one of my favorite code bases.)

Anyways, in that world I can certainly get you in touch with at least one or two of the people still creating the backend/hard-code stuff if you're interested.

@Surasanji yea it was forked off someone elses work. I need to go look at my readme to get the link...

github.com/Syncleus/AetherMUD

Thats my mud. IT was based on another mud but they later closed source their code. Mine is a fork of the code when it was open-source. But its been heavily modified.

@freemo Very cool stuff.

Always glad to see people involved in my hobby! Mu*ers are a somewhat dying breed. A lot of people seem very graphically focused these days when it comes to gaming these days, which is fine. I just really enjoy my 80-character width lines of text. :P

@Surasanji Man know the feeling :) glad to have you at QOTO, looking forward to chatting. Here is a screenshot of my MUD's map and fighting

Message to New Members

Welcome to the Qoto Mastodon instance, its like twitter but better!

Please don't hesitate to Direct Message me or tag me in Toots (what we call tweets here) if you have any questions or even if you just want to chat.

If you are new to Mastodon you may want to check out this official getting started guide: https://github.com/tootsuite/documentation/blob/master/Using-Mastodon/User-guide.md

We are a free speech, no censorship zone. Feel free to talk about whatever you want, say whatever you want, as long as it is legal you wont ever get banned from the server. With that said we do have a few rules: No spam, and no using multiple accounts to circumvent personal bans.

This server isnt a typical mastodon server either. I have personally modified the code on this server to give it several unique features you wont find on other servers.

If you are new to Mastodon here is some useful info.

First off, if your coming from Twitter and you'd prefer an interface that looks exactly like twitter, then just go here and login with your Qoto credential: https://halcyon.qoto.org/ No need to create an account there, your account on this server will work just fine. Just enter your username in the following format @[username]@qoto.org so for me it would be @freemo But personally I think our default skin here is way better.

Basically Mastodon is a decentralized twitter. That means anyone can run a server (like Qoto) that people can sign up to and use just like twitter. The unique part is how the servers talk to each other.

If you want to tag someone on the same server as you then you can just do @user however if you want to specify someone on a different server you can do @user@server. If someone follows you or mentions you on any server on the internet you'll get notified right here. So my full tag is @freemo@qoto.org.

So now a bit about the timelines, there are three (unlike twitter there is just one): Home, Local, Federated.

The Home timeline is just like what you'd expect on twitter, that is, everyone you are following.

The local timeline is any post made by anyone on your local server.

The federated timeline is what is cool. It combines the timeline of everyone on the server into one. This way you can see the posts of everyone that is followed by anyone on the server (assuming the post is public). So this timeline is a close representation of everyone on the internet who has Mastadon (though not really). Moreover we have a bot here that goes around and federates with everyone it can find, so our Federated Feed is rather robust covering thousands of instances.

Only other thing that is unique is listed vs unlisted posts. You have normal privacy settings like on twitter but you also can set a post to be listed or unlisted. If it is listed it acts just as i described. If it is unlisted then it acts just as a normal tweet would but it doesnt show up on local or federated timelines anywhere.

Also this goes without saying, but don't be racist, sexist, hateful, and don't harass people. Its a pretty shitty thing to do, don't be shitty!

The following is the list of QOTO administrators/moderators.
