Anyone have a really good cross-platform Fediverse browser? Ideally, it let's me follow several servers as though they were my local instance and also post/reply from this account.

@cryptovest Realistically, it seems like this is a bring-your-own-moderation platform, which is why I feel like should give individuals better tools

When it came time to reckon with social media’s failings, nobody ran to the “web3” platforms. Nobody asked “can I get paid per message”? Nobody asked about the blockchain. The community of people who’ve been quietly doing this work for years (decades!) ended up being the ones who welcomed everyone over, as always.

FTX blowing up shouldn't be really shocking. At this point, people should assume that nearly all centralized platforms will eventually blow up and nearly all decentralized platforms will eventually be hacked or rug-pulled.

Tumblr maybe becoming an activitypub federating tool (and going open source) is super cool

Free idea: I should be able to subscribe to an entire instance, so I can curate my feed that way rather than having to follow a bajamillion people. Especially with how bad following things is from not-my-instance's-URL

@thephd I really want that. It would make my home instance arbitrary, except maybe for unique features.

People who think a meeting could have been an email haven't seen my inbox

@jpatton @ambihelical yeah, damn, I don't really like the fact that I'm on a server that is blocked there. But that's what I mean by a mechanism for accountability. Rather than blocking at a server to server level, I'm talking about a way for individuals to report bad users to that user's server, and if the moderation request isn't resolved, the user will automatically block the full server. (In case I didn't describe this clearly enough.) Servers that can't keep their users from not being abusive will simply find their reach curtailed over time. Kind of like getting poor rep on your domain hurting your email deliverability.

Not so sure about Qoto's open door policy. I've barely been on here and my replies already have some pretty vile hate speech.

Are there mechanisms for people to share block lists on Mastodon?

Is there an automated way to hold instance operators accountable for behavior on their server? E.g. boot this person or have your whole instance blocked?

This is the week for all companies to bury their bad news.

@barefootstache Where would I get the parts? Would it just make sense to bounce this whole thing off a good plumber?

Time for my !

Hello, Mastodon! My name is Alan Johnson. I have a deep interest in many topics, including tech, management, business, politics, music, history, econ, education, etc. I expect I'll probably use Mastodon in a similar way as I use Twitter -- a place to put thoughts from my very scattered brain out into the world, so that I can learn from the feedback I get. Hopefully I occasionally inspire people with some of my better thoughts, too.

My current profession is running the Data department for an insurance company, and I'm more broadly interested in tech strategy.

The fact that there's even a culture of here is pretty cool, and different from Twitter.

@Decad3nce Yeah, Twitter definitely has the Eye of Sauron effect, where you can be tweeting into what feels like the void, and then suddenly, a deluge of attention, probably on your least thoughtful hot take.

@Decad3nce I totally agree. More conversation would be cool, but the difference in vibe is refreshing.

@mempko I haven't thought much about war, other than its impact on supply chains+energy and therefore inflation. But that's a fair point.

I think it there will be winners and losers. The dot com bust discredited the entire Internet sector. This drawdown will hit the more speculative parts harder--all the buzzwordy spaces--but I think digital innovation in legacy sectors will still be hot and you're probably right about tailwinds for anything with national security connections.

So many layoffs lately, and many at prestigious companies. I suspect a lot of people were hired to support projected growth or big bets, and companies are focusing on getting their unit economics under control for the fraught macroeconomic environment.
