@freemo @Gargron @trinsec @khird Yeah, I think "caves" seems more congruent to the rest of the piece

@freemo @Gargron @trinsec @khird I read the title and beginning of the piece at saying that Eugen is a Nazi or has a Nazi past. I don't think this is the message you're trying to get across and I worry that this will be counterproductive.

That's unfortunate, because I think the body of the piece is very compelling in describing the issue.

@westslopemel They are very similar, and for either one, you link it to your Twitter account and it looks at every single account you follow for a Mastodon-style username, then generates a report with all of them. You can import into Mastodon to follow everyone, or do it manually. I haven't done this last step yet.

@tobyjaffey oh wow, I haven't thought about Hotline in a long time. I remember trying it, but I don't think I used it for more than a few weeks.

Disturbed by reports of Black Mastodon users—Black women in particular—having negative experiences on this app, including being randomly banned for discussions of racism. Some of these users will not come back. All will share their experiences. The answer is not to condescendingly lecture them on “how the fediverse works,” as if their experiences are inevitable, nor to swear to do better next time. (There may not be one.) It’s to do better now lest the reputation of this app be cemented.

There were two notable moderation incidents on mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the past 24 hours that I would like to address. In the first, a post was wrongfully removed due to a report claiming it contained a dogwhistle, and in the second, a person was wrongfully suspended due to a report claiming it's an impersonator. Both were undone and apologies issued.

@BLACKandSTEMGlobal Interesting idea! For the most part, I discover things pretty organically through cross-promotion on things I already listen to and recommendations from people. But I can think of a few things that correlate with my life:

I started listening a lot when I started running home 5 miles from work each day. Some of the early ones I got into are StartUp, WTF, Death Sex & Money, ReplyAll, History of Rome, Hardcore History, and 99% Invisible.

Software Engineering Daily has been a big one for me for a long time for my professional life.

I got into Joe Rogan Experience (boo) when I was a big MMA fan, because he is one of the best commentators on the sport, and he did these hours-long interviews with people, which was really unique.

I got into Pod Save America during the wtf-is-happening-what-do-we-do-now crisis sparked by the Trump election.

I started listening to personal finance (Afford Anything, ChooseFI) and parenting (Janet Lansbury Unruffled) podcasts after my oldest kid was born.

As it became increasingly likely that I was going to go on to Jeopardy, podcasts were a major part of my studying process, to brush up on my American history (American Presidents: Totalus Rankium) and Greek mythology (Let's Talk About Myths, Baby)

I discovered Odd Lots podcast as the Gamestop phenomenon was taking off.

When I was working for a mortgage company, I got into HousingWire Daily and Chrisman Commentary to keep up with the industry.

Veteran stopped Club Q shooter. Per NYT
It was Mr. Fierro’s first time at a drag show, and he was digging it. He had spent 15 years in the Army, and now relished his role as a civilian and a father, watching one of his daughter’s old high-school friends perform.
“These kids want to live that way, want to have a good time, have at it,” he said as he described the night. “I’m happy about it because that is what I fought for, so they can do whatever they hell they want.”

😩 My follow up blog post about Solo hosting will not be ready until tomorrow.
However, as a consolation prize here is a partial list of 18 companies (hosting in 45 countries) that have the tech skills to host your Federated Instance upon your own domain:
darnell.day/stress-free-manage
Note: Some companies are already full & no longer accept new clients. I will also update this list to include more companies in the future.

@chipx86 @molly0xfff Never trust a person with an empty todo list. It's unnatural.

I'm told we Definitely don't have to worry about Grayscale's bitcoin, because they're in a Trust and they are Regulated....and I feel like I've seen this movie before.

@ben11kehoe I've got some unpublished writing on the misconception that proprietary code is an asset.

Everyone wants to be a tech company, because they get sweet market multiples in recent history, and they think they need expensive engineers writing proprietary code to achieve this.

I think there are really two types of tech company: pure tech and tech-enabled. Pure tech companies sell tech products or leverage proprietary tech to do something fundamentally different than their competitors. Tech-enabled companies use technology in existing markets to provide the same service, but better. For tech enabled companies, code should be seen as a liability.

We need software people in tech-enabled companies, but we need to reconceptualize the role to glorify high velocity, low TCO solutions over delivering new bespoke systems as the solution to every problem.

@ben11kehoe I think I get it. What we want is the simplest expression of business process, with the least amount of operational overhead.

If you go from managing hosting of a software product to writing a ton of custom FaaS code, that's might not be a win.

Is the right?

Use-it-or-lose-it flexible spending accounts are a horrible piece of policy. They should be banned rather than being blessed.

@lrhodes I think it's a good option to have, minus the dark patterns Twitter uses to keep you in their algorithm and the lack of transparency on what it's serving you.
