Hi all!

I am Akanksha, currently working as a research tech at HHMI Janelia Research Campus, engineering bioluminescent proteins for functional imaging.

My research interests lie at the interface of chemistry, biology, and engineering 🔬. 'A tool developer' describes me best - in the dry lab, I was working on a systems biology project involving detecting hard-to-find nucleotide changes with certain effects from human transcriptome datasets. Transitioning to a wet lab, I have been engineering proteins for various applications.

Being an avid learner, I spend a lot of time reading articles from across various sub-disciplines in bioscience and biotech. I'm happiest when brainstorming ideas in molecular/synthetic biology or new tools that don't exist with a near-perfect cup of coffee☕ ! Always happy to connect over a crazy idea!

Cheers!

Mastodon has a really nifty edit feature!

Here's how to use it.

1. When you click the ellipsis icon (...), you'll see an option for edit
2. After clicking "Edit", you'll be able to adjust the original message in the Compose box. NOTE: this does not delete the original message
3. In your feed, you can see which messages have been edited by a star on the upper right corner next to the time it was sent
4. You can also view logs of edits by clicking the ▼ icon underneath the message.

#Introduction

I'm a computer scientist / cognitive scientist at the Santa Fe Institute, these days working on conceptual abstraction and analogy-making in AI. Fan of Bongard problems, letter-string analogies, and the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus, among other domains.

We are interested in developing and applying #computational tools and approaches to study #membrane proteins such as #ion channels and #transporters.

I am researcher working at the interface of artificial intelligence and neuroscience. I really wear two hats.

🎩 I work at Meta Reality Labs, thinking about neuromotor neural interfaces.

🤠 I am also an adjunct professor at Stanford, where I think about neural dynamics and how they give rise to computation and behavior.

Hello #ScienceMastodon et al!

I'm a scientist who researches how ions cross cell membranes. I study ion pumps, exchangers and channels which are all amazing nanomachines. My lab is at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland (US).

I also direct a PhD training program in Cellular & Molecular Medicine so my hands are full with all things relating to grad ed.

Expect prolific #foodposting and pix of my handsome #AustralianShepherd Samwise.

The is about to experience “Eternal September” en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eterna with the huge surge of new users. My approach is to be respectful of the written and unwritten rules that made of this online community a welcoming place for us all, to avoid as much as possible a tragedy of the commons en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traged

: I am a research scientist, studying learning and memory and genetic disorders such as neurofibromatosis type 1 (). We do a lot of in vivo imaging and genetic experiments in and human induced pluripotent stem cells (). The lab recently moved to the University of ; we are in Neuroscience and Pharmacology / Pediatrics and the Iowa Neuroscience Institute. Lab web site: tomchiklab.org.

Hi Mastodon! Another migrating neurobiologist here - I’m a sensory neuroscience postdoc at Cornell University working on optimizing functional imaging of circuits using in awake, behaving mice.
Looking forward to the new chapter here!

I am sympathetic though - reminds me of a hilarious Google UX whitepaper about easing users into a gmail design change. There was a section that basically said "Of course none of this matters, users are going to be frustrated and unhappy whatever level of change we implement."

Hello World!

I'm a neuroeconomist. (Except *shhhh* I'm a psych / consumer behavior / neuro person and not actually an economist at all.) I study how people use information to make decisions when they have too much info (like in a grocery store). Or when they have incomplete info (like during many investment decisions)

Nice to meet you. Nice to be here.

Whoa! I know bats are important, but this is insane. An exclusion experiment by Beilke et al shows that forests without bats are *three to five times* as insect-eaten as forests with bats.

Mastodon habits I'm trying to lock in, rather than revert to my Twitter habits:

1) use CWs liberally
2) when threading, set first post to "public" and the rest to "not listed"
3) don't forget the description text when posting images (had to work on that in Twitter too)
4) throw in hashtags like it was Tumblr or Instagram when you want to reach beyond your followers
5) pin and visit hashtags to find more people
6) boost a lot

#introduction. I am a neuro/cell/dev biologist investigating how the delicate meter-long slender processes of neurons, i.e. the #axons that form the cables wiring our nervous system, can be maintained for a century (or fail in neurodegeneration). As an efficient strategy, I use genetics and neurons of the fruitfly #Drosophila able to deal with the enormous complexity at play (image). For many years I have engaged in #scicomm promoting the importance of fly research (poppi62.wordpress.com/publicat)

If you’re a UK-based early career woman scientist who would benefit from £15k to accelerate your independent career, the L’Oréal For Women in Science award is for you!

Apply by 02/12. I’m happy to discuss your application and be your cheerleader. #WomenInSTEM

Following the #NeuroscienceMigration - I'm a neuroscientist at Cornell. My recent research focuses on psychoactive drugs such as ketamine and psychedelics. I like a good cup of coffee and going climbing with my kids. #introduction #neuroscience

I work at GitHub on data product related things, and, when no-one is looking, try to squeeze the odd academia-related feature in (e.g. citation file support). Previously worked on NASA space telescopes, founding the Data Science Mission Office at STScI in Baltimore (home of HST and JWST).

In my 'free' time, I am the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Open Source Software (joss.theoj.org).
