@MRECheese

So in my (possibly very flawed) perception, abortion is used a lot as Plan A instead of Plan B, C, or D.

Anything presented without evidence can be just as easily dismissed without evidence. If your claim is that people generally forgo safe sex just because they can get an abortion later I’m going to need data. And I don’t mean news reports or op-eds, I want hard numbers.

Unless you already have enough money to live solely off the interest, you’re not a capitalist. You’re merely a supporter of capitalists.

To wildly misquote John Mulaney, Capitalism is a hooker, “and you are an idiot who fell in love with her. She’s not gonna do anything else for you. It’s done.”

fuck yeah to all the artists joining the fediverse. this is for you.

@khird Yeah could be, I don’t keep track of how they’re sorted of course. The algorithm they mention in the post is used for the official Mastodon app. I guess it makes sense they would do that to help new users, but I agree with you that a personal recommendation is much better than the results of an algorithm.

@khird Sure, if you think someone would be a good fit in a particular community that’s different.

To which algorithm are you referring? The website doesn’t pick a server for you, it provides a category separated list.

You may be seeing this a lot for the next couple days so I apologize for the repetition. As @Gargron said, if you want your friends to try Mastodon you should direct them to joinmastodon.org rather than one of the big instances directly. It will potentially help spread out the load of all the new users as well as provide some on boarding to help people find awesome services like !

So many new people around here 😲
Welcome everyone!
I am #Tusky, an Android app for Mastodon! (I work with other server software like Pleroma and Pixelfed as well, but 🤫)

Where I am (US) the flag code only mentions burning in the sense of proper disposal. It is silent on the issue of protest. I mention this because using the flag for clothing or advertising, as many nationalists do, is ironically supposed to be prohibited. legion.org/flag/code

@eldritch_cookie Mastodon is definitely popular but if it’s not for you that’s ok.

Hubzilla does have a ton of features. I found it to be overkill for my needs, still a cool project though. The developers don’t like to invite comparisons but if I had to, I’d say friendica and hubzilla are more like facebook (macro-blogging) while mastodon is obviously like twitter (micro-blogging). It also depends how you use it of course. There’s also diaspora which uses it’s own protocol and doesn’t federate with mastodon.

Tbh the federated timeline isn’t great anywhere in my experience. It’s every post from every person that is being followed by someone on your home server. It’s inevitable that a lot of the content won’t interest you unless you’re on a small niche server yourself.

Anyway glad I could help with the links. Hope you’re able to settle in somewhere you like.

@eldritch_cookie It's possible you might be better suited to a smaller instance, or an instance that censors others more aggressively. Maybe even different software like MissKey or Friendica. All are legitimate choices, and if you're not happy definitely check out alternatives. It's part of what makes the fediverse so cool.

I agree with you though that getting started can be hard. Search is actually that way deliberately. It's supposed to prevent dog piling.

This resource may help you at least familiarize yourself with the general landscape github.com/joyeusenoelle/Guide

@trinsec That's for sure. I sometimes joke about buying a bunch of rock salt and just killing everything. I *hate* pulling weeds.

@arh@smallcamp.art I don’t know… This conclusion would require that I consider people individually rather than lump them into homogeneous groups, upon which I can project my own fears and insecurities. How am I supposed to get retweets then? /s
