Happy #Helsinki Day! #OnThisDay in #history - in 1550, King Gustav I of #Sweden (as #Finland was a Swedish territory at the time) established the town as a potential trading post.
Its population remained small until the 20th century, due to plague, fires, and other factors. When Russia annexed Finland, they moved the capital and the Royal Academy from Turku to Helsinki. This helped population growth AND led to the evolution of the University of Helsinki.
