A characteristically beautiful & well-informed presentation by Allan Barton @antiquariananon. Of particular interest, especially to non-specialists, may be the importance of Arabic influence & design (via Sicily)

Earth's days are currently around 24 hours long, but that wasn't always the case. In fact, days used to be two hours longer (Just think of all the extra time you could have spent at work!). LiveScience explains more, including how the moon siphons away our planet’s kinetic energy: flip.it/z6ljwH

🔴 **Andrew Gelman (Guest post): (Trying to) clear up a misunderstanding about decision analysis and significance testing**

"_The point of this post is not to argue to abandon statistical significance—for that, I recommend our article!—but rather to highlight the fundamental differences between Bayesian decision analysis and statistical significance thresholds. They’re not just two ways of doing the same thing, and that’s important!_"

@ChrisMayLA6 It portrays a lack of deeper thinking. What is the guarantee that Threads will not go the way of X/Twitter in the future?

It’s hilarious that climate deniers’ “evidence” that there’s no sea-level rise is that rich people are buying beachfront property. I’ve warned those people, and their reply is always “we’ll just walk away when it’s bad.” That’s the thing about being rich.

🔴 📖 🇺🇸 **Apprentice in Wonderland by Ramin Setoodeh review – how Donald Trump’s big break changed America**

"_The degradation began, as the entertainment journalist Ramin Setoodeh relates, when Donald Trump was catapulted into power by The Apprentice, a reality/talent/gameshow over which he presided on NBC from 2004 until 2017. Before this, Trump was best known as a loud-mouthed, laughable vulgarian, a fixture in tabloid gossip columns whose business career mostly consisted of bankruptcies._"

🔴 📖 **How to Read Like Leonardo Da Vinci?**

"_There is a lot of advice today on how to read more books and to read them more quickly, yet little advice on how to read them well and more thoroughly. To tell someone that you have only read one great book last year and have learnt it by heart sounds less attractive than to tell someone that you read 100+ books last year. Quantity is everything today._"

🔴 🌀 🛰️ **Tempests And Satellite Imagery**

Zoom Earth [@zoom_earth] is a account that trackers hurricanes. Apart from the weather updates I find the real-time satellite imagery that it provides fascinating.

'She said that Irish passports, with membership of the EU, would probably be among the most coveted. For decades, unmarried Irish mothers were coerced into giving up their children for adoption in Britain.

A spokesperson for Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed would-be Irish citizens have already started using DNA evidence to help prove they are entitled to Irish citizenship through a parent, and that this evidence is submissible in passport applications.'

@juglugs Once finished on the mobile phone may be a session on the desktop is in order?

@davidallengreen I know exactly what you mean. It is so irritating and it is one of the primary reasons why I avoid reading local news websites as much as is possible.

@davidallengreen Avoiding clickbait titles in local newpaper websites are another form of playing Space Invaders.

@adrianmorales I think I will give them a miss at $14 per month. Having said that I would give them a miss even at $0 per month.
