Minds in the Margins: Annotators Bringing Books to Life

We recently had a remarkable copy of Apianusโ€™s Cosmographicus liber (1533), a treatise on geography and astronomy. Its value lies in the extensive annotations, especially in the one on leaf XXXIV, shown below. The note corrects the text by adding the name of Columbus as one of Americaโ€™s discoverers alongside Vespucci, and reports a learned tradition that America was known to Augustan Rome by quoting two lines from the Aeneid.

The Start of De-Dollarization: Chinaโ€™s Gradual Move Away from the USD

“In the first few months of 2010, settlements in local currency accounted for less than 1.0% of Chinaโ€™s cross-border payments, compared to approximately 83.0% in USD.

China has since closed that gap. In March 2023, the share of the RMB in Chinaโ€™s settlements surpassed the USD for the first time.”

Hermeneutical disarmament

Hermeneutical disarmament is the process by which a person is rendered less able to understand or communicate experiences, ideas, and other phenomena as a result of semantic change to the linguistic resources that could previously have been deployed for these purposes.

Ancient genomes revealed the complex human interactions of the ancient western Tibetans

Outside the Tibetan Plateau, the western Tibetan Plateau populations interacted with both South and Central Asian populations at least 2,000 years ago, and the South Asian-related genetic influence, despite being very limited, was from the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) migrants in Central Asia instead of the IVC populations from the Indus Valley.

F. A. Hayek, Libertarianism, and the Denationalization of Money

Hayek found support within the American libertarian movement. Libertarians realized that Hayek’s radical proposal would limit state control over the monetary system and allow for the free exchange of gold.

Conditional Enfranchisement: How Partisanship Determines Support for Noncitizen Voting Rights

Our findings suggest that U.S. voters are pragmatic about extending the local franchise to noncitizens. Although U.S. voters are, on average, indifferent toward local noncitizen suffrage, they oppose enfranchisement when noncitizens would vote for the opposing party.

Origins of medieval coinage revealed

The implication is that Anglo-Saxon elites had access to significant quantities of Byzantine silver, something that dramatically alters our view of how economically and politically connected they were.

Yes, this! Also for series. The superposition of ready for it to end but also not looking forward to the intellectual energy required to find and invest in the next one. My happiest book moments are those middle pages - invested but not yet fatigued.

How do you feel when you approach the end of a that you have enjoyed ?

I am nearing the end of a seven hundred and forty seven page . Just forty five pages to go. I am experiencing mixed emotions as I have enjoyed the work, it increased my knowledge and widened my intellectual horizon; however, I will be glad when the book is finished.

I have spent years looking at or watching advertisements on the internet. In all those years from what I can recall, I have never bought an item that was being sold to me via an advertisement.

Have you ever bought a product that you saw being advertised?

Today, Google Translate thought that โ€œlangoustineโ€, which is apparently the English name for the type of lobster found near Iceland, as โ€œlangreyรฐiโ€ in Icelandic

Langreyรฐi is the Icelandic word for โ€œfin whaleโ€, which is not a type of lobster.
