🚗 ❓ **Questions**
I do not understand the modern phenomenon of inhaling laughing gas whilst driving a motor vehicle. Why would anyone want to do this? For those who partake in such activities, why do they think it is a good idea with no or minimal associated risk?

"_The shift in tone marks a shift in power now that companies are shrinking their white-collar staff. With jobs harder to find, many workers are seeing perks disappear and their grievances ignored._"
@bibliolater @bookstodon I haven't done so yet myself (gasp!), but based on Ulysses: 1. listen to a good audiobook adaptation while reading, esp. a dramatized production with different actors for each character (lots of directorial decisions there, obvs). 2. Read it in community---a book club, a class--so you can discuss each chapter right after reading it. 3. Consult commentaries lightly, but don't let them overwhelm you. 4. When the text seems like sheer nonsense, listen to it as music.
🇺🇸 **Lest We Forget / Davenport**
_"Lest we forget" is the refrain in Rudyard Kipling's poem, Recessional, published in 1897 at the height of the British empire. In the poem, Kipling warns against the perils of pride and the impermanence of power. The United States emerged from the Spanish American war in 1899 as a quasi-imperial power. The cartoonist may be cautioning the nation to remember its humble beginnings._

🖥️ 🧠 **Delusions by design? How everyday AIs might be fuelling psychosis (and what can be done about it)**
"_Emerging, and rapidly accumulating, evidence indicates that agential AI may mirror, validate or amplify delusional or grandiose content, particularly in users already vulnerable to psychosis, due in part to the models’ design to maximise engagement and affirmation, although notably it is not clear whether these interactions have resulted or can result in the emergence of de novo psychosis in the absence of pre-existing vulnerability._"

Years ago I built a scanner something like this one, but the mechanism is my hands, not any automation. I can do a 400 page book in an evening (but it gets super boring, I admit). "Days or weeks" is nonsense.
Done by hand, errors can be spotted and corrections made on the spot. I've seen many many scans on archive dot org where a page or three is totally botched or missed right in the middle of a book.
High speed has its place, but not at the price of quality.
