#OTD 1 July 1770 Lexell's Comet is seen closer to the Earth than any other comet in recorded history, approaching to a distance of 0.0146 astronomical units (2,180,000 km). It was discovered by French astronomer Charles Messier though later named after Anders Johan Lexell

Born #onthisday 377 years ago, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was one of the most important logicians, mathematicians and natural philosophers of the Enlightenment.

Leibniz developed the ideas of differential and integral calculus (independently of Isaac Newton's contemporaneous development) and we use his notation and terminology to this day. Leibniz also designed and built mechanical calculators and made many important contributions to physics, philosophy, biology and medicine.
