Well, okay, I joined . I am not excited about it so far, though, and I guess it's mostly just because the first thing I want to do is enter a whole bunch of books I've read, but it seems to insist that I GIVE IT THE DATE THAT I FINISHED for every book.

I don't remember! Why should I have to remember? Or alternately why should I have to lie?

@ceoln Oh boy. I really wouldn't remember the dates either, lol. I just read and then remember the stories afterward. Shouldn't that be enough?!

@trinsec
Exactly. (Though I don't always remember the stories either, heh.)

@ceoln Goodreads does that, but i think you can around it. I tried to sign up for BookWyrm a while back, but their server was down and I never went back.

@obi
Yeah, the server (is bookwyrm.social the only one?) seems pretty slow today too.

I think by default, or at most with a single click, you can register a book as read in GoodReads without a "Finished" date.

If not, I apologize to . :)

@trinsec @ceoln yup, I saw others but wanted the main one. Maybe I will signup. Goodreads is only convenient for me with Kindle integration, but as a service its a mess

@trinsec @obi
Ah, cool, thanks! Thematically I really should have joined bookrastinating... :D

@ceoln @obi if I navigate to a book page, then click the drop down for lists to add it to (default says "want to read"), then select "read" to mark to as already read, there is a started and finished reading date field with finished defaulting to today. But you can delete that and still click post/submit.

@finity @obi
Sorry, is that on bookwyrm or goodreads? I couldn't figure out a way to delete it on bookwyrm. Maybe I could edit the DOM... :)

@ceoln @obi lol, bookwyrm. I'm on an Android phone right now, but following that method above, then clicking the finished date brought up a date picker, the date picker had a "clear" option, that worked for me.

Maybe it's a browser difference, it maybe you're getting to a similar but different dialog. I like bookwyrm quite a bit, but there are a few different ways to accomplish the same thing sometimes, and they don't all feel the same unfortunately.

@finity @obi
Ah, nice, thanks! I went into The Catcher in the Rye and was able to delete the Finished date, so that worked! Not being able to not give one in the first place might indeed have been a Browser Thing or something.

@MomDrinksSwears
Ty! :) I made them in , so depending on your thoughts about AI art tools...

@MomDrinksSwears

Ha, I envy you a bit for having missed all the discourse! :)

is one of these (the best one imho) new tools where you enter some text and set some switches and things, and it makes images for you. I've made several thousand by now. XD

It's great for those with no artistic skills to be able to create stuff anyway, but there are questions around the impact it will have on working artists, especially given that the AIs are trained by being shown lots and lots of existing human art.

@ceoln Oh, that’s really interesting. I’m not creative at all. I am a good sketcher, I just have to be sketching what’s right in front of me. I’ll have to try it out! But my daughter is a digital artist who hand draws all her art. I’m curious about what her thoughts would be on the matter.

@ceoln I imported my Goodreads data into Bookwyrm, and it's not asking me for any dates. Weird.

@susanna
Yeah, apparently it's only certain paths to entering a book (and maybe certain browsers, even?) where the control requires a date. So I am more hopeful now!

Is there a simple way to import goodreads into ? I should look that up...

@ceoln I just exported all my data from Goodreads and then imported it into Bookwyrm. The export was very fast, the import not so much.

@susanna
Thanks! I'm in the midst of doing that now, having found the relevant buttons. And yeah, the import looks like it'll take awhile. :) But that's okay.
