Hey, it turns out that community defense works really well against far-right thugs.

As a human rights lawyer who has done extensive immigration work, let me make something absolutely clear.
Asylum is legal immigration.
There's no "port of entry" requirement.
There's no "visa" requirement.
There's no "first country" requirement.
You enter the United States, and you apply for asylum.
Because asylum is legal immigration. Period.
Period.
Best wishes this holiday season from Kerensa and her human housemates. #dogs #Christmas #photography
#Hyperlexia can look and feel like #Dyslexia.
I read faster than my ability to process it. My brain is word-hungry and forages for delicious information like a hunter-gather looking for the juiciest fruits. The words jumble up because I jump from place to place in the sentence/paragraph.
As a child I was an advanced reader, but now as an adult I would probably be picked up on a dyslexia test. I often wonder if some dyslexics are actually hyperlexics.

Children Of The Deer

Where in the wild forest of laughing skulls
do children of the deer still run and play?
When Icarus leaps on glass wings of light
the eyeless princess of the lost lake weeps,
but he cannot hear her calling his name
so he falls to Earth and rise again lame.

There is no such thing as the tragedy of the commons: a thread.
The oldest published reference to the idea is in a lecture by an early political economist at Oxford, William Foster Lloyd, in 1832 titled "On the Checks to Population." Lloyd first articulated the argument that many of us have been taught as an inevitable and immutable fact of economic life: that any resource owned in common will be exploited to the point of ruin.
"Why are the cattle on a common so puny and stunted? Why is the common itself so hare-worn, and cropped so differently from the adjoining inclosures? No inequality, in respect of natural or acquired fertility, will account for the phenomenon."

The older I get, the more aware I am that being critical rather than enjoying things is not a sign of intelligence or wisdom. Not loving things - movies, art, music, people, situations - because of their weaknesses doesn't make you better than them, it means you're unable to see past imperfections. Sure, some things absolutely are bad & should be left behind - but being hypercritical denies you joy. I need reminded of this every day. Too many things are legit bad to throw out good ones too.
"There has always been one criticism I found harder to ignore: the Mary problem." But it isn't, really. Here's why. ICYMI @ClareCoffey: https://www.thebulwark.com/there-is-no-mary-problem-in-its-a-wonderful-life/
So I joined in March 2019, but since there's been so many new people showing I think it's high time I posted a #Mastodon #introduction for them.
I am a recently-minted mathematics Ph.D. currently going for a masters' degree in cybersecurity at Rochester Institute of Technology. I am very interested in math, computers, computer security, literature (particularly fiction --- I like writing short stories) and languages. For hobbies I do coding, math research, walks at night, biking, camping and hunting with my father.
My political views at the moment (they have evolved over time, and will undoubtedly continue to evolve) are best described as a blend of social democracy and left-leaning liberalism, with one or two outlying positions thrown in as well. This aside, I don't mind hanging out with pretty much anyone, as long as they aren't hateful, bigoted, arguing in bad faith, or otherwise more unpleasant than pleasant to deal with. I tend to think, based on experience, that the best way to understand other perspectives and even get others to change minds on subjects is to be friendly, talk openly and honestly, and engage others in good faith whenever possible. (@tolortslubor, I hope this helps and is to your liking!)
