Seems most people have suggestions for #Mastodon #newbies. So here's one of mine, esp for those who want to grow engagement. Try to spend a little time to look--deliberately 👀LOOK👀 --for posts not getting much (if any) response. It's something that always bothered me "there," and certainly bothers me no less here, to see folks putting up heartfelt, sometimes heartWRENCHING posts that nobody answers. Sometimes just knowing you're seen and heard can make a big difference. End of TED talk...

@stephstephking @wordswithnima I prefer reading paper too, but here's a neat thing I found out recently: most web pages can be saved to "Pocket" and then those can be opened on a Kobo reader. It's made it possible to read long web stories cuddled up with my cat on the couch. (Bonus: Kobo works with the Canadian library system and Overdrive.)

IMHO we need completely different words for at least four different things: being extremely fond of someone and enjoying being with them and wanting nothing but the best for them; wanting to sort of merge at least parts of your practical everyday life with theirs; wanting to do the sex with them; and finally wanting to possess and control them and prevent them from loving anyone else in any or all of the other senses.
The current narrative is that those are basically all the same thing, and that leads to some real pain and suffering!

omg the nostalgia! I still have dreams in which I log into my VM/CMS account.
It was eventually possible to send immediate messages between people on different VNET / BITNET connected machines, using something in RSCS whose exact name I've forgotten. But at least in my subculture it wasn't commonly used; a one-line email (NOTE) was considered more polite.

The problem with the large language models is that they will happily just make stuff up, which makes them slightly less useful in this particular application.
Although they are excellent as half-crazed writing assistants!

Not sure who still needs to hear this, but if your business is making record profits and your employees are on strike for reasonable and humane compensation and benefits, then if one party needs to be forced to make concessions for the “good of the country” it isn’t the workers that should have to do that.
