In 1923, the New York Times Magazine published an article about one exception to the then-current prohibition against alcohol sales: foreign embassies.
Charge of the Little Embassies at Washington
https://sundaymagazine.org/2023/02/05/charge-of-the-little-embassies-at-washington/
Of course, the location of most of these foreign embassies (Washington D.C.) means that the politicians responsible for prohibition were not themselves without access to alcohol. Some things don't seem to change.
"they will get us off fossil dependency sooner": only if we aren't charging them from fossil sources. Doesn't this just push exactly the same problem one slot further up the chain?
@GreenFire
I... don't understand. EVs are not generators, they don't produce electricity (except in the unimportant regenerative-braking sense; but eventually you're at the bottom of a hill).
You can't power your house from your EV unless you're powering your EV from something else. It might in some circumstances be a useful temporary mobile battery, but surely that's a niche?
What am I overlooking?
I'm trying to give people who criticise the lack of #Algorithm on #Mastodon the benefit of the doubt - maybe they don't know how to create their own feed.
Here's what you do:

Then, talk to people. Be nice. Don't bring over #Twitter argumentative habits. You will have a better experience here that way.
New in Public Notice: Dems rally behind Biden — and the political press weeps
"Any objective assessment of the state of politics going into the 2024 primary season has to acknowledge that the Democrats are a mostly united, functional small-d democratic party, while Republicans are a howling abyss of dissension and fascism. The disappointment at Biden’s smooth path to renomination suggests that this is still not a story the press wants to tell." https://aaronrupar.substack.com/p/dems-rally-behind-biden-2024-gop-in-disarray
Things that threaten me:
1) the basic fact that I cannot determine my own medical care in almost half of these United States
2) That I'm still paid on average $.17 per hour less than my male counterparts (I've personally experienced the wage gap as much worse than that)
3) the casual sexism of merely existing as a woman
Things that don't threaten me:
1) trans people working out
2) trans people using bathrooms
3) trans people just living their lives

Under a new law, Russian authorities will take DNA from everyone suspected of any crime, even “offenses” like protesting peacefully.

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth
Still haven't made it to Black history yet. I'm still working through white US history.
Q: Why do so many Black people refuse to sing the US national anthem? I'm sorry, but that seems unpatriotic to me. Plus, the Whitney Houston version is amazing! Why don't you like Whitney Houston? Whitney!
A: Because more Black folk know the true history of the anthem, and some can't get past the racism.

Or as #ChatGPT said in https://blog.edross.co.uk/post/706555817427632129/you-must-not-trust-chatgpt to my question
"A search engine provider is planning to integrate ChatGPT into its results pages. Given what you have said so far, what would you say about that".....
"Based on what I’ve said so far, I would advise caution when integrating ChatGPT into a search engine’s results pages. While GPT models like ChatGPT can generate text that is coherent and natural-sounding, they are not yet reliable enough to provide accurate or factual information.
Search engines are typically used to find accurate and relevant information, and users may expect the same level of accuracy and relevance from any information generated by the search engine. Integrating ChatGPT into the results pages could lead to confusion and disappointment for users who expect accurate and relevant information.
It’s also important to keep in mind that the GPT models like ChatGPT are still in the early stages of development and there is still room for improvement. They are not yet reliable enough to provide accurate or reliable information or make decisions.
In summary, I would advise caution when integrating ChatGPT into a search engine’s results pages, as it may lead to confusion and disappointment for users who expect accurate and relevant information. It’s important to be transparent about the limitations of the model and to evaluate the performance of the model and compare it to human-generated text."
On the flip side, time card fraud *is* a felony, and people regularly go to jail for it. Timecard fraud is when an employee:
* Knows that their pay is determined by when they clock in and clock out
* Knowingly clocks in when they are not working, or clocks out significantly after they have stopped working
I don't understand why stealing $1000 in one direction is a felony that DAs give people years for, but in the other it's a civil matter where restitution and a fine are the usual punishments.
