I feel like I need to find an #instance on Mastodon where folks in my local timeline would generally want to see most/all of my posts. But I feel like the folks on the science/astronomy/STEM instance aren’t going to want to see a lot of leftist/socialist/anti-capitalism stuff and vice versa. And then there’s the writing and poetry and photography and…etc.
The general instances seem so…big and don’t have that concentration of specialized posting I enjoy in the local feed. I know ppl say that what instance you’re on doesn’t matter that much, but I don’t want to feel like I’m putting out a bunch of stuff that others on my instance think is spammy. Is my Twitter brain viewing this wrong? Do I just pick an instance and #CW half my posts? #newbie #TwitterMigration #mastodon #MastodonTips #advice #HowtoMastodon
@obi thanks for that. This instance has felt like the best fit for me so far.
@clyminghawk Great to hear! I love it here, personally.
@clyminghawk some random guy from a different server "got mad" at me and "campaigned" various servers because i had multiple accounts lol , it even led to me being "banned" after my introduction post... never knew who that guy was, but i would say definitely find a local timeline you enjoy and where you want to discover folks, because it really does help to be on the right server(s)?
@clyminghawk check this out, maybe it will help maybe you just like this sort of thing (like me) https://www.comeetie.fr/galerie/mapstodon/?instance=scicomm.xyz
@tonic this is really cool! Thanks for the link!
@tonic oh wow that’s awful. It’s so confusing at first - and a lot of people, articles, and sites recommend multiple accounts! I’m glad you stuck around after such an awful ‘welcome’.
@clyminghawk Good point, I was wondering about the same! Having multiple accounts for different purposes (work/private/whatever) is acceptable on #mastodon, isn't it? That might solve your problem. Got my intel from here: https://martinfowler.com/articles/exploring-mastodon.html
Yes it is totally acceptable and probably the best way to categorize your life. In @clyminghawk example, one could be on an instance that deals with science topics while being on another instance that deals with political topics.
@barefootstache @tietsche that’s probably my best solution. I’m kind of allergic to compartmentalization but I need to get over myself, I guess. Lol
@clyminghawk People aren't one-sided single interest organisms - we're multifaceted and we like lots of different things. Just go for it. If people don't like it they can always unfollow. Local and Federated timelines are going to be zapping by anyway if the migration continues, so no-one will see much if they don't follow you. Just go for it and enjoy yourself!
qoto is an instance for STEM professionals, but not necessarily just STEM content.
I'm retired so my interests are not just science and tech anymore, so maybe I tend to toot stuff that's all over the place. I try to tie it into science/tech whenever possible, though, like my #/caturday toot today and last Saturday.
Re the political stuff, there are folks here who are all over the spectrum, so if you want to discuss/debate issues/philosophies, you're sure to find people who like to do that.
Looking over your toots, I think you're fine and they have a nice balance. I notice that new folks tend to do more boosting, which makes sense because they're still getting a feel for things prior to putting out a bunch of their own content.
I hope you enjoy qoto and make it your Mastodon home.
@clyminghawk
I've been on mastodon for maybe 2 hours total but it seems that following hashtags might be the bridge between silos that many of us are looking for? Click on a hashtag, and when it opens in a new TL column, click the follow icon on upper right. Worth a try maybe.🐣 newbies figuring it out together
@clyminghawk That's a very thoughtful approach. If it makes you feel any better, I see the things you describe on the local timeline here constantly, and is well within the rules. This is about the most open instance out there, so feel free. I don't think you will find a place that is specifically all of those things, nor will any of us find a place where only our specific interests are posted.
