#Introduction for new folks. A s/w engineer for over 20yrs. Started out in #Linux set-top-boxes, did Playstation dev at a game studio, worked on VNC, optical network gear, home automation/energy (Hive) and lots more.
For 8yrs, I've been freelance doing #embedded and #IoT. I've worked with lots of great startups from undersea cameras to bike navigation, medical devices and giant art installations.

When I'm not doing that, I'm sea #kayaking, cooking or out walking the countryside and coast.

#introduction time!
Hello folks! I’m an Electrical Engineer having worked primarily in the Rocket/Aviation tech world but now focusing on the ocean research world at UW here in Seattle. I dabble in #hamradio #electronics and some #embedded #C. I’ve also been into #rockclimbing and #mountaineering for some time now and always happy to get outdoors. Sometimes I combined it all with #SummitsOnTheAir. When I get time to do projects at home I sometimes post them!

Mastodon right now is full of the loveliest people posting introductions about themselves and why they’re there and honestly, we want to follow every single one of them now humbly telling others who they are, what they love and why they’re there.

Bless.

Well, this place is a little different, eh? I'm Scott, a lover with a varied tech past including / administration, technical sales, sales leadership, people in , , , , and other topics.

Once again I have been informed that cooking fish sticks and chicken nuggets on the same cookie sheet does not, in fact, count as "surf 'n turf."

The literal highlight of the Semiconductor Industry Association awards ceremony last night was the San Jose Marriott's Chihuly-esque chandelier design.

made it in and out of #python dependency hell in less than an hour! Poetry is a pretty cool tool once you know how to use it correctly

Hi All,

Time for a re-#introduction!

I've worked in tech for around 25 years, and am now a tech burnout. I've worked in healthcare, #opensource, financial, consulted, etc. I started with Netware and Linux in the 90's!

I'm living the dream of living in the woods. So far, its not perfect but I'm much happier.

I'm interested in #opensource, #automotive, and #mechanic stuff. Would love to meet locals in #michigan who share these interests!

I have 11 #chickens and 3 #cats!

Thinking about FTX and its entanglement with effective altruism, I have long had misgivings about both the philosophical position and its adoption by corporations.

In addition to the usual problems with utilitarianism, I am particularly concerned by its epistemic naïveity (esp. in longtermism), use as corporate whitewash, and emptiness in addressing meaningful structural change. [Amia Srinivasan's review](lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v37/n18/am) of _Doing Good Better_ captures this well:

"[E]ffective altruism, so far at least, has been a conservative movement, calling us back to where we already are: the world as it is, our institutions as they are. MacAskill does not address the deep sources of global misery – international trade and finance, debt, nationalism, imperialism, racial and gender-based subordination, war, environmental degradation, corruption, exploitation of labour – or the forces that ensure its reproduction. Effective altruism doesn’t try to understand how power works, except to better align itself with it. In this sense it leaves everything just as it is. This is no doubt comforting to those who enjoy the status quo – and may in part account for the movement’s success."

The entire review is well worth a read if you are interested in EA and ethics.

Also if you're new to Mastodon, please check out Tootle or MetaText instead of the official app. Both are much better

Good morning everyone, just a quick update from the DATACENTER to let you know how things are going.

Our efforts last Friday to distribute the instance across a number of machines is certainly working well, as we've been able to handle all the new folks coming in.

With all the new activity, it has also shown light on some areas where we can improve and we're working on that right now.

Thank you for being here!

Today is #LGBTQSTEMDay ! A day to celebrate all the LGBTQ+ people who work in or study science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. I’m proud to be a part of a worldwide community of amazing people doing amazing things!

Don’t say, “I didn’t do it” to the person. Who knows how to get into the logs.

#Introductions

I'm Chris, a POC from a US ghetto, worked as a social worker and STEM teacher for poor, homeless, immigrant and largely non-white kids in America's inner-city slum. I'm a one-person indie game dev, and my games are personal reflections of my experiences.

I've been doing gamedev for 25+ years, my largest project to date is Neofeud, a cyberpunk adventure game. I made it while teaching full time, and homeless, w/ my wife and kids living in the back of a Mazda Tribute. Cuz America.
