Today I discovered and joined a new instance. Amazing how we cross paths and discover things at random points. Serendipity, is a Thing.

This instance is called Expired Mentality, RIP.

Source of the name? I will quote :

" yep, thanks to hysterical Gab dev for this name. youtu.be/TveK9Sfwtvo?t=96 "

LOL.... 😜

@a1batross Worth mentioning that GlitchSoc instances ( cutting edge branch of Mastodon development, various cool instances running it right now) , GS instances already support MarkDown formatting in text.

Which looks very pretty in the GS instances, and does NOT mess up or break normal Mastodon nodes. The same message shows as a plain Jane, no makeup, girl next door on a Monday morning version. lol...

Example below? GlitchSoc posted, with MarkDown rich text, and viewed in Pinafore client.

** Things to Keep an Eye out For **

A client for mobile devices that support the Enhanced Text format that Pleroma users enjoy in their instances.

We here in mastodon world, can always wish for, but they have it, NOW.

Mobile clients still not supporting these extensions, but I was just chatting with an admin of a Pleroma node who is building a fork of Tusky -- which will offer that and more.

Not released yet, he's waiting for Tusky release v.10, since his code is based on development versions of Tusky itself.

Thanks @a1batross !! Look forward to seeing it!

Please note the Source -- The Atlantic is a wonderful magazine. Thank you Bernie, time to bring US into the modern day and age.

Please look at this status for an important explanation on WHY we don't have more reasonable limits on Toot size, or an easier to change limit.

By Design. Mr Mastodon head developer thinks it is best done so.

@Yann @a1batross @mittorn it could be a config option but Gargron decided against it.

(the person who opened that issue on Mastodon's issue tracker is the Pleroma dev, if that tells you anything)

My thoughts on why the cramped 500 characters maximum Toot is a relic which Mastodon developers should consider revising. Or making easier to change, for the few instances that allow their users more modern space and limits.

------

Geez...

I have encountered the hard core Twitter user mentality in some admins I have made this request to.

They were users there for years, are used to the short burst posting, which I as a Forum user find baffling, unattractive and a general pain in the butt, to be perfectly honest.

There was a time, in the older days, when twitter started and ran over SMS. The 140 character limit came from that, as people had voice and SMS access, not mobile data.

The cramped space, terseness resulting from it, I could understand in that situation. But we have left that long behind.

I usually don't feel attracted to responding to the very short one liners. To call that "micro blogging" is a weird distortion of what I consider blogging to be.

I do write long posts in mastodon, and much longer form in Blog posts; have a hell of a time to post an announcement in Twitter for those in their measly 240 chars.

OP at my new Pleroma account, which thankfully doesn't have this Fossilized limit in place.

Thank you, friend... OP : twit.social/@souldessin/103443

This one seems to have one advantage compared to my own setup -- there's mentions of Columns being adjustable in width, which is a nicety I have only found in ONE client for Mastodon so far --> Whalebird.

Found at another instance, a fellow user suggesting a way to use the FULL width of our modern laptop/desktop screens.

A big pet peeve of mine, if you know me. (got mine running and quite happy)

Here's his/her suggestion :

"Another tip is to use the the browser addon Stylus and then add a userstyle like userstyles.org/styles/154943/m to make it fill whole the screen. You have to edit the userstyle to include your instance though. "

Read this Guardian piece.

It seems increasingly obvious to me that mainstream social media has failed us. It's being weaponized by propagandists in the same way Goebbels used the new medium of radio to manipulate the German populace. You could say the same thing for mainstream media like the 24-hour news channels.

Fleeing to the suburbs of Mastodon and small forums like twit.community seems like burying one's head in the sand, but what else can one do?

Have you ever seen or heard of the Altair 8800?

Jess is rebuilding one, and I just found a pic, cropped here for size (Bytes, I save them).

On the future writings front, I found a new inspiration.

Had seen Pleroma nodes in the past, when first joining , but there was so much new stuff to look and try to understand that I never joined a node to see what it is like.

Now I did, and I am impressed. Wow!

Lots of nice features. Things I only dream of here, or beg (in vain, mostly) for masto admins to consider adding in their nodes.

Have been taking and saving screenshots, will prepare an extensive report via Blog when I can understand it better.

But I want to share the news, there's a lot of talent working on that project. Kudos, Pleroma project.

For the time being, if anyone wants to see and join, I found this nice node via someone mentioning it -- and I seeing their post by chance.

expired.mentality.rip is a nice one. Recommended. @a1batross is the local admin, and a competent one. Kudos.

@Yann is my newest alt ID.

Your message was seen here in a Pleroma node with full formating intact, and looks much nicer than plain text indeed.

As we go into the message editor in Pleroma, you have a choice of how your text will be formatted or not.

Plain text as in the dead elephant nodes.
HTML Markup code for any enhancement you want.
MarkDown, which does most of the same, much easier to use.
And BBCode — which for years was used in Forums and is similarly friendly.

Choices. Amazing. This is a new account, I had never been in a Pleroma node, and it is a very pleasant experience so far.

Ah —- No freeking Pesky 500 character max limit here. 65,555 when I started this message.

Still got 64,700 left, if I fancied writing a mini novel. :agummywink:

One of 4 screencaptures in a post I just enjoyed reading, showing the impact of the Spanish users migration to Mastodon, just before the New Year.

Here, the user numbers and posts count for Mastodon.social in the end of December.
