We have just been talking, and discovered many of us started up in the old days - when BBSes were the only networking connection most people could have. Internet at the time was for Academics and large Business users, all the software used was command line only (shell, ftp, gopher at best).

BBSes were wonderful experiences. I think many people never lived thru that, but there's a great documentary you can watch and see how it was like, very well done.

DVDs are no longer for sale. But a fellow has it on YouTube for now:

How shamefully disgusting. I dont know why its so hard for people to be decent towards others. Are we really so far gone as a people that this is the sort of shit we have to deal with :(

We are very cautious about who we pick as mods and try to review them for some time. They cam be left leaning or right leaning, I dont mind that, but they must show compassion and objectivity in how they handle others they disagree with.

I a very happy with the mods we have so far in that regard ( @arteteco and @Surasanji
)

M.S and even many other mastodon incidents tend to have this pattern of behavior. They tend to pick a secret political affiliation then ban everyone who seems to be on the other side

Fear of M.S abusing moderation, as they do, is exactly why I started so we will never do that here so long as you treat liberals with full respect and dont constantly belittle or attack others then you will be fine, even protected here.

We want people on QOTO to be free, without fear, to post their opinions and ideas. For that to happen we have to ensure we dont go around censoring people for opinions.

Be kind to others and you will always be welcome here regardless of your views.

Mastodon does have some nice, fine control settings in the "Preferences" menus.

I had been lost with some foreign language posts which, without the Google Translate available on birdsite are completely obscure. Mastodon allow Filtering posts by Language.

Select the ones you know or even have a passing familiarity with, all others will be removed from your feed. Very useful for the Federated Feed area.

When the news of the day is getting to you... Maybe try "Tiles" puzzle game at the NYT?

I'm seeing a lot of coverage on Mastodon lately, but the Fediverse doesn't just consist of Mastodon instances, there's also:

- Pleroma instances, like Wolf Howl!
- Misskey instances, like catgirl.life!
- Gab, we pretend they don't exist~

... and more!

The Fediverse is about freedom, down to picking the software of your preference and the server of your preference. Don't feel liek you're just restricted to one!

Not all places in fediverse are as friendly, polite as we might expect. A list of banned instances from mastodon.social might map places to beware of :blobspy:

Got to ride _another_ new train today, and look at how pretty this station is lit up by the sunset 😭

We are getting asked about "verified accounts" quite often recently, so lets try to clear this up: There are no verified accounts on Mastodon like there are on Twitter. Some Mastodon instances have a custom emoji that looks like the verified icon on Twitter and people put that in their display name, probably because it looks fancy. It does not mean anything though.

One thing about mastodon that seems different to any other social media I’ve used is that we’re all a load of nerds saying “hey, here’s a thing I learned today and here are some resources so you can learn too”, (mostly) constructive discussion, and really long, in-depth threads about things you’ve never thought about before.

Mike's one piece of advice for new Mastodon users - dive into that Federated column and follow ANYONE and EVERYONE who looks like they've posted anything at all interesting to you. Just hammer the button. There's no penalty for mistakes. Go wild.

Later, when your Home timeline is buzzing, go in and unfollow people you decide you're not enjoying so much now.

Then do that again a few times. Then some more. Forever.

Set on the Atlantic west coast just north of Cabo da Roca in #Portugal is the little gem of a beach called Praia da Ursa. The name of the beach comes from the "Rocha da Ursa" (bear rock) one of two huge sea stacks at the northern end of the beach.

Just found this on Spotify, seems a great idea. Headphones are a wonderful way to listen to music with high quality sound, as long as they are decent.
