@mngrif Why what happened? I havent heard of anyone defederating from us in quite a while.

@freemo @mngrif your "follow without actually following" feature has caused a wave of cancellation within the mastodoners

@tuxcrafting

Who? Where? It honors all privacy settings and is the same functionality as other clients in the fediverse?

@mngrif

@freemo @mngrif yeah but it's a ~privacy issue~
how? no idea, but according to them it is
@tuxcrafting @freemo @mngrif wait so it's like following but you can't see followers-only posts (if i'm getting this right) so it's the same thing as just looking at their profile

where's the issue
@freemo @tuxcrafting @mngrif i mean maybe if it causes posts to federate where they wouldn't normally? that's all i can think of
@freon @freemo @mngrif @tuxcrafting i dont think it will even federate things in, but if it does, its still a public post

shit like this really makes me wish they would bail the activitypub network entirely because its completely incapable of giving them anywhere near the privacy they want but instead of finding somewhere that does, they just raise hell about it with other users on the network

theyre not protecting themselves from the exploitation they fear so much by just blocking people they dont want to hear and pretending they dont exist
@deltarae @freon @freemo @mngrif @tuxcrafting they're not going to bail the activitypub network because they wouldn't have anything to complain about

they like this drama. Have you seen these threads? People are enthusiastic about blocking instances - it gets more engagement than any other post they make, and for far less effort.

It's the perfect dopamine storm. The person who posts it feels like they're doing the right thing, and are vindicated when people boost it. The people who block the domain and cc their admin feel like they're doing the right thing by jumping on the bandwagon, and by being "proactive about safety".

People, who never were powerful on Instagram or Twitter or Tumblr, now control websites with thousands of people signed up. They're angry at how moderation occurred on those platforms so they want to prove how they can do better. And unlike those platforms, they get significant positive reenforcement for the actions they take.

So no, despite what they've said about going back to Twitter or making a new protocol (Parastat) they have no intention of doing any such thing. They're going to remain as a scourge on this network, discouraging people from joining due to the never-ending drama, fights, cancellations, etc. Eventually that might be overcome, I already feel like it is in a lot of places, but who knows.

Ultimately, the number one thing to do is NOT what @mngrif did. I get how it can be appealing to take the easy road but it's not the best one. Instead of moving to another instance to please the instance blockers, the people on the blocking instances should move to instances that do not block. While it's hard to convince people to leave their home on the Fediverse, show them what they're missing out on - and if they refuse to come along, so be it, it's their loss. There's no lack of good and interesting people who are willing to talk on here.
@mewmew
This is why I screenshot them instead of reply. They probably had me instance blocked already anyway and they dont need the attention

Really the best thing you can do to stick it to that part of the network is to be worth following. They are already missing out, so make them regret it.
@deltarae @freemo @freon @mngrif @tuxcrafting
@tuxcrafting @freemo @mngrif remainder that on ostatus an user timeline was just basically a atom feed you could subscribe on

@tuxcrafting It's an amazing feature though xD once I get basic issues worked out I want to implement it on here @freemo @mngrif

@Coomer @tuxcrafting @mngrif

Its a common sense feature IMO, its also nothing new as people can also follow you through RSS feeds.

@design_RG That is exactly my plan too LMFAO at some point these people are going to have to accept that public posts aren't private information. @freemo @tuxcrafting @mngrif

@design_RG

The irony is i didnt even write this feature from scratch. It was adapted from a japanese instance, and was contributed by an official mastodon developer (though didnt make it into the official mastodon instance).

@Coomer @tuxcrafting @mngrif

@freemo
That comment from the liberpunk.club guy is a good explanation of the backlash.

Pretty silly reaction as the posts which could be seen are of course "Public" as set by their original posters.

But reaction will exist. PrincessKitty who I had some interaction with in a previous "Ban them" thread even mentioned the nerve of Qoto people responding in her thread, at that time. 😜

@Coomer @tuxcrafting @mngrif

@design_RG

My opinion remains what it aways has been. I will happily discuss and actively address concerns. But if people are just looking for excuses to ban without asking an admin whats up or discussing solutions first... well in my eyes we are much **much** better off being suspended by them.

@Coomer @tuxcrafting @mngrif

@design_RG >They didn't like me telling people to block them therefore they're bad.

Did I read that right? @freemo @tuxcrafting @mngrif

@Coomer
DissidentKitty had her "Ban Them" thread going for a few hours when I saw one of the replies fly by in the Federated feed..

Read up all of the posts until then, and responded, and she did not like it. It happened on Christmas Eve morning, if I am not mistaken. Pretty ironic time to post asking for a banishment of a whole internet community.

@freemo @tuxcrafting @mngrif

@design_RG

By the way news of this dfiasco has gotten to Gargron and he has been responding to comments on it all day.

Go to his profile and look at "Toots and Replies" the last 20 or so, their mixed in there.

@Coomer @tuxcrafting @mngrif

@freemo

Fortunately, reading through that, he seems to be rather more level-headed than the instigators of the complaint.
