Being drunk is fairly enjoyable, though not really worth the negative health effects long term or the next day.

I'm kinda glad for many of the fun times I had when I was drunk, they were great memories and a fun time. But the next day is always so bad as to remind me not to do it again for a long time :)

As the Irish say: Every moment of pleasure must be purchased with an equal moment of pain... about what I'd expect the irish to say :)

@freemo There seems to be a difference between drunk and tipsy. Tipsy people can be funny if you realize they're just buzzed. Drunk people are not.

By that definition would you say some people never get drunk no matter how much they drink, even if they drink so much as to be passing out due to intoxication?

I know people who can drink almost any amount and turn into an asshole. I know others who are generally funny and loving no matter how much they drink right up until the point they pass out.

to me tipsy and drunk are two different levels of intoxication and not two types of personalities.

@freemo No clue, that is just my experience. :P The assholes are the ones who claim not to remember anything the next day. There are exceptions of course.

I do find the assholes are often the ones who arent just drunk but alcoholics and it does seem correlated with more black-outs (not remembering). The nicer people seem to not get blackouts even when they are just as drunk... just my personal observation though.

@freemo I don't hang around in pubs anymore. All my buddies have moved on with their lives. From students to responsible adults now, so yeah.. Not seeing much drunkards lately. ;) So all I have now is vague memories and that I don't like dealing with people who think logic doesn't apply to them, heh.

Thankfully none of my friends are alchoholics. Those people always find some way to reason that they are, in fact, not addicted. It's amazing. One alcoholic I knew even told me he hid the booze in his underwear drawer but he certainly is not an alcoholic...

I am in the same boat, drunk people are a rare occurance in my life.. I'm more than happy to have a crazy time and get drunk once a year, maybe every few years, but for the most part it doesnt really happen. To me getting drunk is for weddings or when you want to get half a dozen of your friends together and get a limo and party just cause.. which im happy to do, but again very rare.

Yea any friends of mine whoa re alcoholics are, thankfully, recovered and dont drink anymore.

Keep in mind getting drunk, even getting drunk often isnt always the same as alcoholism (though it may represent irresponsibility). that said alcoholics, true alcoholics, are really bad off. Its a hell of a disease and they have my sympathy to say the least.

@trinsec @freemo @mur2501 they are doing that as alcoholism isn't viewed as a sickness but as a weakness. our societies don't like weaklings, especially when it's due to their own actions. they usually perfectly know that they have a problem, but they won't admit it because then they'll be shunned by society.

alcohol roughly triggers the same response in the brain as benzodiazepines. thus i'd say that nearly every case of alcoholism is self-treatment of other issues. nobody shits on people on medication for anxiety, but if you are told often enough that those are weak people, you'll rather use alcohol than get treatment.

it doesn't have to be plain telling them that they are weak, i think the advertising everywhere and seeing other people being happy seemingly without effort is enough to get the message through.
