I just bought a Cosmo Communicator. It is a palm-top computer but also a cell phone. It also supports linux... this is going to be soooo epic.

@freemo Does it? I don't think that SoC has free drivers (certainly not mainline and the PMOS page is a mess.)

@swiley Yup, and the linux distro seems to fully support all the features, even that little LCD on the front you see when its closed.

@freemo It looks like they're using Halium ("libhybris") to me. It is nice to see a more popular smartphone manufacturer putting effort into Linux compatibility though.

@swiley im not sure this counts as a particularly popular smartphone manufacturer. Their past products hav emostly been PDAs

@freemo Maybe approachable is a better word. I feel like I could convince my parents to buy that more easily than a Pinephone.

@swiley I dont think parents are tech savvy enough half the time to know the difference :)

@freemo please tell me how it is when you have it and used it for a while

@freemo What is this??
No explanation or link to maker.

@eionmac I explained it, its a palm top that runs linux, which is what matters.

I also mentioned the name of the device, so its a quick google search to find a link if your interested in learning more.

@freemo It presently runs Android. (Linux inside). Other linux distros not yet available. I will wait until it can run a distro I use. I see it as a pocket distro (I rarely use other than 2G phones).

@eionmac You are correct that Ubuntu is the only distro currently officially supported. That said, should be trivial to install any distro you want at this point. If ubuntu runs it wouldnt be very hard to run other distros.

@freemo I would be scared to mess with the installed distro! I am no competent enough.

@eionmac The distro isnt pre-installed for you. If you want to run linux on it, even ubuntu, you still have to install it. They just provide an easy custom installer is all.

@freemo is it mainlined Linux or does it use Android & halium kernel?

@freemo let me know how well it runs linux if you decide.

@freemo I have a openmoko from back in the day pre iphones :D.. I now own a librem5 which Im rather impressd with but the keyboard part of this phone has me a little jelous :D

@twotwenty the keyboard is a big part of why i got this one. I am told it is very tactile

@freemo
This looks like a very nice device. From pictures I saw on the Indigogo page (funding closed), it seems that you can use it as a phone while keeping the keyboard and larger screen closed. Such a use case won't be possible with the Pinephone keyboard accessory. Admittedly, the Pinephone is much cheaper.

@normandc yea that front screen and ability to use it closed is a very nice feature if you intend to use it as a phone.

Can't wait to get mine.
