So what is everyone doing on the day we celebrate murdering a bunch of native americans, and then them being nice to us anyway so they feed us, and then we returned the favor by murdering the rest of them off anyway? Turkey? Turkey seems like an appropriate celebration for that....
@icedquinn Thats kinda sad...
@freemo @icedquinn When I was young and single, I celebrated "day I don't get paid to not work, and spend alone."
This year my wife's adult CAD son visits with us. It's not as a religious thing, just a pretext for family time now that I AM paid to not work a couple days.
I like turkeys. I think they're cute.
It makes me sad to think that so many of them die because of this holiday.
I don't know what God was thinking. Literally. I don't know.
I know what I think. I think it is sad that all those wonderful birds are killed. I think there is a lot of tasty food available that doesn't hurt anyone.
@Pat @freemo @Romaq @icedquinn
Long story short, God has a bad sense of humor. You can also tell by God being the father of the original dad joke.
For your sanity, don't think too far into it or you'll be too exasperated to continue carrying the flame.
@icedquinn@blob.cat @freemo@qoto.org You need to find a better household.
@freemo It was more that we infected them than murder

A!though sometimes genocide and infection were mixed:

On the other hand, they gave us syphilis.
@rrb I mean we literally threw small pox infected blankets at them with the intention of murdering them and had countless wars with them and paid money for indian scalps.... infection may have been a big part of it, but it was murder all the same.
@freemo syphilis is pretty good revenge
@freemo just spitballing here, but we Americans are too busy fighting 100 other culture wars to be goaded into this one : ).
#happythanksgiving
@freemo I remember looking into this before, years ago with conflicting results. Your version and Christian Squanto version, and the failure of their communist experiment. Think I need to revisit the issue, as I never came to a good conclusion of what probably happened.
@freemo On thanksgiving, I typically think of the stories of the Shooter and the Farmer, and it's relationship to the fundamental laws of the universe.
Also, this year, I have 2 Turkeys.
@freemo maybe read https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Empire-of-the-Summer-Moon/S-C-Gwynne/9781416591061 and realize the native Americans where pretty well equipped and in practice of wiping out entire tribes of each other before we ever got here. Tit for tat blame doesn’t do anyone any good all human history is horrible, looking at it from this day and age.
@jasonesman I have no idea what you rpoint is... Yes of course they engage in wars with eachother, I never claimed they were saints. That doesnt justify a campaign of extermination on our part, full stop.
@freemo that’s simply the point no justification on either side it is the past why can’t we move forward, admit yeah the past was messed up no saints and try to be better humans.
@jasonesman Its easy to say when you;'ve nearly exterminate a people and soved them into small reservations with slum like conditions and no resources to sell ... yea at that point the victor saying "Ok lets just forgive and forget and move on from here". Forgiveness comes with actions that lead to redemption, I havent seen that in our history or our present.
@freemo I’m not saying anything people in the past have done is good nor am I defending it but I’m not mad because your ancestor hit my ancestor on the head with a club in the cave days… my grandmother lived on an reservation in Ada ok her life wasn’t easy but again get out of the past make a better future for all human kind. What she told me to do…
