I dieted that one wednesday like 3 weeks ago when i passed out without eating dinner. How is it I'm still the same weight!

@hendrikboom3 if its encoded magnetically though why would it have to read and re-write the byte. If the byte is unchanged cant it just stay on the drum head as-is? Again unless im missing something this just sounds like a hard-drive platter to me.

I entierly agree it is wrong to say your not really gay, or you hate cis men, etc. Its wrong when you say it to someone who isnt trans and is just CIS, and its wrong when you say it to someone who is trans.

I think people are too stuck on sex, and some backwards need to identify people by their sex, as if chromosomes or what genitalia someone has even matters most of the time, it doesnt. Language has always used gender, not sex, to identify how we speak to people, and Id say even how we treat them.

I mean hell, even though im sure most trans people obviously have a different between their natural sex, and their chosen gender there are quite a few who are probably also born intersex where even these sorts of assertions fall short.

In the end, who cares what someones sex is, who cares what genitals they were born with or what chromosomes they have. All you can see is their gender, so treat them according to their gender. Anything else is a douche move and NO ONE has a right to tell someone else if their gender is real or not.

@koyu@koyu.space I clicked that expecting to see someone having an epileptic seizure....

@celesteh Interesting note. You do not actually reduce plastic waste by reducing plastic consumption.

Plastic is a secondary product. In other words, waste from a primary product is converted into plastic. Even if you dont buy plastic as long as the purchase of the primary product remains the same you will have no positive impact on environmental waste.

Plastic is usually made as a byproduct from the coal and oil industry. So the only effective way to reduce plastic waste is to reduce petroleum, oil, or coal consumption.

In fact if you reduce plastic consumption you actually increase environmental waste. The reason is that the original plastic waste is still there but it is never used in a useful product, goes right to the dump and additional waste and resources must be expended to create those same products out of other materials. Thus increasing overall waste.

@hendrikboom3 mercury delay lines were at the birth of computing. ENIAC had one as its memory. I highly doubt you can get them today. They are insanely expensive, bulky, poisonous, and hold very little memory. I cant imagine any use for them still being made today.

@hendrikboom3 A magnetic drum isnt a delay line though, so I'm confused what you mean then.

@hendrikboom3 I suspect you mean magnetostrictive delay lines. They were the next generation right after mercury delay lines. They operated via torsional waves in a wire. very cool stuff.

Russell's Paradox:

In a group of people who are shaved there is a single barber. The barber shaves all the people who do not shave themselves. Who shaves the barber?

It can't be the barber himself, because he only shaves people who do not shave themself, thus he can not shave himself. It also can't be anyone else as the barber shaves ALL people who do not shave themselves, so no one else could possibly shave another person.

Therefore it is impossible for all three properties to define a set at the same time:
* everyone is shaved
* The barber shaves people who don't shave themself
* The barber is the only person who can shave other people

This creates two sets one of the people who shave themselves and one shaved by the barber. Since the barber is not allowed to shave himself the sets must be disjoint, but since the barber must be shaved they must also intersect. Since both are not possible there is a contradiction and thus the paradox.

What this means is we can not say any arbitrary set of properties can be used to define a set, as some may give rise to a contradiction.

A more generalized example of the paradox is the idea of a set that contains "all possible sets that do not contain themselves as a set". This is called the universal set. So for example if we had set A defined as the numbers 1, 2 and 3 or A = {1,2,3}, however if set A was A = {A, 1, 2, 3} then it would be excluded. The problem arises when you consider if the universal set includes itself as an element by this definition. If it doesnt contain itself as an element then it qualifies for the rules of inclusion, and thus is included, but by including it it now DOES contain itself as an element thus can not be included. Reaching a paradox once again where the definition of the set as we defined it can not be satisfied. Another example that a set can not simply be defined by an arbitrary collection of properties. Some combinations of properties are invalid while others are not.

@hendrikboom3 yea but those are pretty common and can be bought ready made. Plus it seems to lack the cool factor in my mind.

@snailix@scicomm.xyz You're still rockin it I see :)

@hal@slime.global Thanks, I had a similar reaction.

I kinda 😍 this JS syntax as it's really useful for default properties. But also kinda 😱 as I totally didn't get the `= {}` bit at first & I still find it unintuitive! 😄

Back when mama cat had a family in my garden. Luckily we have since found the kittens a home and managed to get mama spade. she still lives in a cat box I made for her in my back yard. Poor girl probably misses her babies, she was a good mother. But I'm sure this is better for all of them now. More food for her, more food for the kittehs, and no more babies.

Now if only I could wrangle up a few humans and get them spade I might be able to make a real difference.

I often find most married and committed couples dont know the first thing about what love is. When you get affection inreturn, perhaps even build eachother up its easy to mistake that for love. It may be healthy and good and enriching, but love is much more than that. True and proper love exists not for what you get in return, to love is all love wants, not to be loved in return, that is just infatuation.
