@mattskala Well it does apply to japanese interests. They arent avoiding the japanese servers because they think the safety concern doesnt apply to them. They just know they will have a much harder time getting them interested in the issue at all, so dont waste the effort.

Hell I'm an admin to QOTO and have not been directly approached by a single person asking me to block GAB. I have seen a TON of posts like that as a general call to action. But none directed specifically at me or any other english instance anyway.

@mattskala Honestly it never even crosses my mind due to the language barrier. I am certainly not racist and i have fairly minimal interaction with the japanese servers personally.

@mattskala

First off before I answer let me make clear I dont agree with their stance of blocking instances. I am the admin over at and the only time we would block an instance is if it was being intentionally malicious (for example if people open multiple accounts to explicitly circumvent bans without admin intervention).

With that said let me answer your question. Because the people advocating for this are american, the issue with the server is specific to US politics. The people who know about gab and are likely to give a damn are also, likewise, english speaking servers who host americans. Therefore it would make perfect sense why they would focus on these servers rather than Japenese servers that are unlikely to care.

To put it more simply, if you are advocating for a cause it is simple common sense to focus your attention on people most likely to be receptive to your argument.

@mattskala I was with ya up until the racist comment. I fail to see how that is remotely racist.

@Fatih19 Here you go. Not the original study but they do link to several credible sources to make the same point. Here is the link and relevant quote:

"Two studies have found that at least 40 percent of police officer families experience domestic violence, in contrast to 10 percent of families in the general population. A third study of older and more experienced officers found a rate of 24 percent, indicating that domestic violence is two to four times more common among police families than American families in general." Cops "typically handle cases of police family violence informally, often without an official report, investigation, or even check of the victim's safety,"

@Augur This particular half-brother I always knew about. Met him once as a kid. But in adulthood I met two other half-siblings I didnt know existed from two different mothers.

My dad was in black ops (Green Berets) and later in life the CIA. He was married to 7 wives throughout his life but his sisters think some of those were likely CIA covers, but they dont really know. Regardless siblings continue to pop up.

@freemo No, followers-only posts are already enforcable. It's a way to make public posts enforcable. And no, signatures are a basic component of ActivityPub, so it's not a break away from standards.

Soooooo my half brother who I haven't heard from in 20 years just reached out to me... just left a message with his number asking me to call.

Haven't spoken to him since I was a little kid. This should be interesting.

@Gargron Ahh wonderful, thank you for all the info. Good luck. As always if i can help with anything just let me know.

@Gargron Cool, so its really just a way to make the followers-only posts actually enforcable. Makes sense.

This also means it wont work with anything but mastodon servers right? Its not ActivityPub standard compliant I presume?

@Gargron I assume even with this enabled public posts can not be viewed by anyone running something other than mastodon? Or does it not effect public posts and one effects posts you share friends-only?

As always thanks for your hard work.
