#Napster and #Spotify similarities / relativity...

has a fan from Sweden, Daniel Ek who was fascinated by the ‘all you can play’ experience offered by file-sharing software and planted the seeds for , the streaming startup where he still serves as CEO today...

AND did or does file-sharing of the music under the hood to relieve the load through it's users!

P.S Why does the name Spotify work so well when it's not so literal or connected to anything existing - even sounding like a cleaning advert - but works as a 'have you go spotify' not that I use it.

I like this quote a lot as goes through all .

Best quote for this month I'm sure...

@JessTheUnstill @dlakelan @VeilidNetwork There's apparently an anti-abuse piece of Signal that is closed source so as not to make sidestepping that too easy. A signal fork would need an equivalent.

And yes, the signal server repo is open source and recently active.

Mastodon Filesize Bloat - Pasted Pictures = Big #PNG Filesize for all #Fediverse

/

2.7MB PNG FILE (from copy and paste process of images... files as pasted output are massive frequently).

OF BIG 2.7MB PNG FILE HERE:
mastodon.social/@RubyGold/1143

Same but PNG as a pasted version = FILE

2mb more than original picture as drag/drop for example...

So copy and paste costs the Fediverse a whole lot more and actually takes time to download (ever wonder while it crawls some pictures?)!

TONS OF BANDWIDTH AND STORAGE / DOWNLOAD / CACHE just to see few hundred KB pic for what was 1 small JPG!

is useful and PNG I understand cleans data (doesn't store it) but surely a could do the same (there might be more reasons but I don't see them)...

Dream up a great new software feature that is very likely to be unique in the fediverse

Spend half the night awake imagining how it will best be implemented so that it will just bloody work

In 2010 I left Facebook and set out to build a decentralised alternative. What I found out along the way is that it wasn't just Facebook I was replacing. What we created was a privacy-respecting overlay network on top of the internet so we could replace the entire surveillance state with a system where you controlled access to your thoughts and ideas and shared it on a single sign-in decentralised network. In fact we built that, and it works great, but most people rejected it because they don't understand what that has to do with Facebook. Everything and nothing amigo. We've been living in this privacy respecting overlay internet for nearly a decade now and refuse to go back to the old ways. We've always hoped the internet itself would catch on and evolve to meet us halfway, but it seems to be devolving, so in retrospect the architectural design (as an overlay network) turned out to be the correct one.

The Zot Manifesto

You have the right to a permanent internet identity which is not associated with what server you are currently using and cannot be taken away from you by anybody, ever.

You have the right to refuse/reject or possibly moderate comments on your posts by anybody you don't know.

You also have the right to not allow them to comment on your posts in the first place, until such time as they have earned your trust.

You have the right to show your photos and videos to anybody you desire and also NOT show them to anybody you desire.

If your software does not implement these rights, you have the right to fix it or replace it.

Good question for + etc - Those who are thrashing hashtags instead of building their own thing and giving less energy to leaders / rich / powerful etc because hate only spins 🌀 their :hot_shit:

As I look through public Facebook page comments, the Discworld quote "I need no axe to be a dwarf,” said Bashfullsson. “Nor do I need to hate trolls. What kind of creature defines itself by hatred?" is never far from being an appropriate reply.

How do I allow to my computer hard drive to someone directly?

No big software or layers like / .

Can I /#SFTP with an desktop app for example ?

I want you to see my files 📁 on a specific drive directly even if slow.

Can you browse / open my files from there if I allow you ? 📂

How? ❓ 💻 🌐 ➡️ 💻 💾

In the rest of the UK council tax debt is written off after 6 years. In Scotland it's 20 years or longer.

Fear of bailiffs means people don't go to councils for the help they need, locking them in a cycle of poverty.

Today the Scottish Parliament can vote for our amendment to change that.

People don't like a full cup / person it seems 🍵

Almost empty cups / people is better. 🙎 🤷 Shrug
