Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt

The only video of Eartha Kitt singing this song I could find. BTW, Eartha Kitt deserves to be better known. Unique voice.

According to Russian state tv, everything is going according to plan. But here is the undeniable truth:
In June, 1 barrel of russian oil was over $100. Now 1 barrel is below $56, and the latest sanctions are only starting to kick in.
So Happy New Year to Vladimir Putin and good luck financing the Russian 2023 state budget with half the oil income, fleeing workers, and war spending going through the roof.

Sometimes when I post a link it just posts the URL. Other times the link is formatted with a preview. I don't know what I am doing differently but I would like it to always have a preview. Any idea how to do that?

It has been interesting watching people and the burgeoning Mastodon community grapple with the tension of the great Twitter migration. The spectrum ranging from "how do we replicate Twitter without a tyrant" to "how can we reinvent microblogging" to "what the heck is a toot" is one layer, and the noob to "I have been here for years" is another that have revealed the complexities and alignment/misaligned of values and visions.

Fedfree is live! fedfree.org/

Fedfree is a website aimed at teaching people how to run their own servers, of various kinds, on libre operating systems e.g. Linux and BSD. It aims to do this, using libre software exclusively, teaching people about the importance of libre software and hardware as it pertains to freedom; the right to use, study, adapt, share. The right to read. Universal access to knowledge… education. Education is the goal.

One tutorial so far, but more are coming.

@freemo established standard? so there are many instances that use it, not just us? if so then yes it would certainly be preferable if Mastodon adopts it instead of creating a new one.

98.8% of the US population lives in counties with substantial or higher transmission. This map, based on data which the CDC downplays, is far more meaningful than the misinformation in the CDC's Community Level map which intentionally downplays the pandemic & need for masking.

@freemo I am happy that qoto has QT implemented but if Mastodon implements it too we should definitely go with the Mastodon wide version. Ours only works properly in web interface and only for qoto users. It's not available in apps and if I understand it correctly people on other instances only see our QTs as links, is that right btw? adding a link is not at all the same as full QT. just posting a link is adding friction to the process. You may think that friction is minor but it is not. People don't click on links. They want visual info about the quoted toot, not a link.

@dynode There are certainly many questions about whether Mastodon can scale successfully or at all. I have great many misgivings about it myself.
And yes, it’s a legitimate worry to wonder how it will handle a large number of people who have very different values and don’t intend to behave.
But if Mastodon scales it will take many years, no matter what happens to twitter. Even if twitter disappears tomorrow, existing Mastodon instances will not take in an order of magnitude increase of users, let alone two orders of magnitude. For technical reasons for sure but also b/c of difficulties in moderation this would entail. Many instances are already restricting signups even though the influx of new users which has been quite modest so far (compared to twitter size that is).

And Mastodon certainly won’t scale if it doesn’t get a LOT more user friendly (which in particular means getting QT implemented), especially to content creators such as journalists. Some other platform will win out or they will remain on twitter. If they do leave it will only be to somewhere which is receptive or at least not outwardly hostile to their needs.

anyway, all this speculation is for far future. now is the time to experiment and try things - while Mastodon is still small. I already mentioned two things that should significantly reduce the potential for abuse of QT. Moderation is one. Giving users and perhaps instances granular control over QT permissions is another.
There is also the dynamic of relationships between instances. I don’t fully understand it but from what the admin of our instance posts about it, badly behaving instances get defederated. Sometimes too aggressively according to him. This provides strong incentive for instances to keep moderation strict even if user numbers increase substantially. Hopefully this will continue although overuse of degeneration is its own worry.

All in all my strong opinion is that if implemented well benefits of supporting QT far outweigh potential issues.

Btw, FWIW, I don’t expect twitter to implode. it’s too big to fail and has a great hold on its user base. It’s basically a black hole - very difficult to escape. Despite all the terrible things Musk has said and done only a small percentage of ppl left and many (most? ) of those have gone back after trying or other competitors.

All that is likely happen to twitter is that it will get even more toxic but will remain the biggest platform of its kind. If it does fail it won’t happen b/c of user flight but b/c of financial issues. or perhaps serious technical issues but that does not appear likely.

@gabipurcaru tried using your tool on myself and it refuses to work. keeps saying "No results found." Could you debug please?

@dynode it’s also possible for someone intending on abuse to post a link to a toot and send their followers there. this doesn’t happens on Mastodon because
a) people don’t click on links (which is why linking is no substitute for QT btw)
b) moderation on Mastodon is very strong and any high profile account sending their followers to harass somebody would be very quickly slapped down by the mods. My instance supports QT (I used it on the post you replied to). I have NEVER seen the feature abused.

Lastly, as Tyler suggests in that thread controls can and should be implementing allowing users to change which posts can be QTed and by whom.

If you have family gatherings upcoming, don't forget to test for COVID. My sister was planning a brunch tomorrow, but two members of her household just tested positive.

If they hadn't tested, we might have exposed our mom and 97 year old grandma to a deadly virus.

Seriously. Don't chance it. Test.

I am sure you've seen this but I've only recently come across it and found it very fascinating.

@mikestevens @taylorlorenz actually the devs are warming up to it more. It just may not be the priority now.

I also created this github to further the discussion.
