@dpiponi there aren't actually any math books like that that I have encountered.

Happy 100th Birthday to Stan Lee. You are missed, my friend. #StanLee100

@RassilonianLegate @mathlover @mastodonusercount if you look at the total number of users the bot is reporting it actually went down from the previous hour. a glitch seems a likely explanation. or maybe some server just disconnected?

@jamesgunn It's sad to see Marvel movies without Stan cameos.

$TSLA crashing because the company is on autopilot is the most fitting end to 2022 possible

@freemo I am claiming that when someone wants to burn one of those books I'll discuss it. Until then I want to discuss actual problems not fantasy ones.

@freemo when this situation actually arises let me know. until then how about we stick with the problem we are actually dealing with?

Something is happening to Norway.

A fascinating, perhaps terrifying, scrolling multimedia walk through an undeniable fact. Climate change is bringing great change to Norway.

@freemo we are going in circles here. I disagree with everything you just said. helping spread dangerous medical misinformation is not science. it's the opposite. it leads to tangible harm which is happening right now if you pay attention to the news.

@freemo to elaborate then. I find your comparison ridiculous. and misleading. we are dealing with with a specific situation which can and should be addressed directly on merits. which is: how to deal with an instance dedicated to spreading misinformation, particularly medical one. the account I mentioned is hardly unique there. it's ALL like that (antivaxx, Alex Jones, oil to fight cancer etc) as you can easily see by scrolling through a few posts on their local timeline. by federating with them we are helping spread those messages. leaving it up to individual users to block them is the wrong recipe. that attitude is what led to the spread of antivaxxer sentiment in the first place and we are now dealing with the results.

@herid I believe there was some criticism by Greek and Arab scholars of at least some of Aristotle's theories (for instance, I know that his (rather strange) theory of vision was disputed by Alhazen, Avicenna, and others), but prior to Galileo I don't think there was a consensus on how to definitively refute a physical theory; in particular, Galileo is often credited with a major role in promoting the modern scientific method.

We're badly in need of better decentralized moderation tools.

Individuals blocking individuals is not an effective way to handle abuse.

I want the ability to have an automated way to block instances if they do not handle abuse reports. If I see an abusive user from an unfamiliar instance, it's not easy for me to know whether their behavior is the norm or will go unpunished. It would be nice to have a one-click:

1. Block this user for me from an abusive post
2. Report to *their* instance admin "If the linked behavior is acceptable on your instance, I will block your instance."
3. Autoblock the instance if no response in, say, 3 days
4. If the admin responds, give the option to block the instance.
