Could Mastodon replace Twitter?
My answer is No.
I don't think Mastodon could replace Twitter.
The most important thing about the rising social media website is not about the technology they use, it's about the group of people using. Like Suckerberg's Faceshit, when the dawn of Faceshit, they have the real-life social network support of Harvard University. And they force everyone to use their real name on there to protect their advantage. A lot of people want to know someone from Harvard, and a lot of people wanted to flirt them, that's why Faceshit was raised. If you are from a high SES status, you want people to please you, join Faceshit, if you are from a low SES status, you want to talk to high SES status people, join Faceshit also. So, everything is about SES on there, they don't allow you not tell your real name. That makes the whole thing super annoying. I thought the whole thing is BS about 12 years ago. If you are from a high SES background and well known, you got tons of likes whatever you say, if you are nobody, no one gives you a shitty "like".
The whole thing of Faceshit is about SES, it's the advantage of it, the advantage Mastodon could never have. It gives you a chance to talk to the top 1% of SES people, it's suppress the shitty design of it's page, and their censorship, many people on here thinks the main problem of Faceshit is a technological and programming problem, it's not, the tech of Faceshit using when it created, it's not rocketed science. It's a political problem, it's about the idea of personal worship by someone's identity in real life, counting everyone's values by their identity in real life. But most of the people are not from a high SES status, so it leads to the infinite show off competition. Suckerberg used his background and the will of revenge his ex to create that shit. I think he had a horrible personality when I know the idea of his FaceMash, and I never view he is talented. But he is good at use his background and family SES to take advantage, and he is very sensitive about this. The "successful" of Facemash shows he has many asshole classmates as well.
Faceshit is the symbol of the upper middle class people want to stabilize their social network, don't want to waste their time to those "worthless people" and make sure everyone they talk to is worthy, because the SES of upper middle class is dropping by automation, they are anxious as hell, the real name identity can help them to avoid some people may drag them down (actually, Faceshit collecting the big data to making the process of automation faster). And there is a side effort that some kidnappers use the Faceshit to tracking wealthy children personal whereabouts. Suckerberg is not the only person control all things in Faceshit for sure.
So, this is the philosophy of Faceshit, if you want to build something against it, you have to know it first.
LinkedIn copied the successful strategy of Faceshit, but they do it too blatant, lead to lack of friendly in their community, so they are not well known as Faceshit in the world.
When the first time I join Twitter, I thought it was a shit site for dyslexia people but it did not tell us. I think it the evidence that people trying to avoid high-quality communication but want to tell everyone they exist... People are easier to show their true colors in such short communication, it's not a place to talk, but a place to rant. By the rule of following number is about people's identity, I imagine that if Donald Trump say he will leave Twitter and join Mastodon, he will bring the rising of Mastodon, but he will never do that. Because he is good at rant and drama act only.
Back to Mastodon, let me see which groups are in here when the dawn of it. Obviously not the Harvard University.

Well... This user base is quite... Lack of attractiveness compared with the community of Harvard University. But I think I see a rising point... This is since the economic problems rising, the government in different nations would start censoring many political incorrect contents on the internet. And the feature of Mastodon can avoid this censorship.
I know many programmers on here... honestly, I think the problem of most programmers is they are reductionist, and the kind of people who excellent at coding are strong reductionist. They lost a lot of the details from the real world, programming effected the world view of them, making them oversimplified many things, it seems they even don't think about why many programmers wrote programs as Faceshit, but only Faceshit is well known over the world. It's not about the codes or what is the internet should be, it's about who are the people are using. And the group of people using the site believe they need site, the social network is very important to them. (for example, pedos need NSFW images from pawoo)What can we do is try to build strong bond on Mastodon, I am not sure it could work...
I am not a reductionist, that's why I think I am not good at coding...
And I think the Mastodon community, for now, can not build a strong bonding community to make people not leave.
Facebook and Twitter take down a too huge part of the market already, so it's tough.
We will see the population growing since more and more censorship on Faceshit and twitter is losing money. If the mastodon takes down a little part of their market, I am really sure we'll see the mainstream media keeping to report there are many pedophiles on Mastodon.
