@benroyce So much this. I had a Republican neighbor who asked me if I was registered to vote. I said no. He said you have to be. Then went inside his apartment and grabbed a form. Came outside and handed it to me, with an envelope that was addressed and stamped. He said fill this out. I did, I signed it, he witnessed my signature and I mailed it in. I have voted in every election since that day. For Democrats. However, the point is, we all need to vote. @feike

Look, once people have free healthcare and education and a social safety net (no matter how good or flawed), it’s very hard for them to even conceive of what life would be like without them, and hard to not want better.
That is always going to be a balancing act.

The one regional zone that all three powers (US, Russia and China) find deeply problematic is Europe.

Having an EU that practices reasonably coherent democracies, has robust human rights laws, legally curtails the misbehaviour of corporations, a free trade zone, rule of law and large middle classes is an anathema. It stands as living working proof that all the laws and norms they insist weaken their own systems, can and do work fine.

The EU needs to take this on board. Its continued existence
